Some good results from retarding exhaust cam

I got 40whp more by retarding the exhaust cam 4 degrees. I have the fp2's and i was surprised i got that much.

I just got done changing my timing belt and waterpump etc myself.. and before the job I would see full boost @ 3K right on the mark. now it doesnt hit full boost until 3500. Boost leak tested to 35psi, checked cam allignment & stuck screw driver in cyl #1, pistons at very top when they allign. dropped downpipe, so nothing is causing it from exhaust... All i can think of is before the exhaust cam must have been off 1 tooth? would it be worth it to take some tension off my timing tensioner and turn the exhaust cam back 1 tooth? Would it really make the spool like before? Let me know.

if you have adjustable gears, pull the top cover and give the exhaust cam 4deg advance. See if that helps. If you don't have adjustable gears, all you can do is 1 tooth at a time, and thats a fair amount, 7.5 deg, 48 teeth/360deg.

I'd double check all my marks again, I know its a total pain to pull the wheel, cover, belts, crank pulley and lower cover, but you must be off a tooth if you changed no other parts than the belts and tensioner etc.

Also, you might not know, but you have to turn the engine over a few revolutions to get all the marks in line when its correctly setup.

ya 6 revolutions, I did it after i set tension then reinserted the pin etc made sure it went back in after turning. all the marks are lined up.. theres not much more I can do. I already went through this road before and checked the timing marks. I have stock gears so I would have to go 1 tooth. So would 1 tooth retarded on the exhaust side fix my spoolup? I have dsmlink so I can work around the lopey idle if that happens.

took your advice rechecked everything even tension on belt, everything checked out perfect. i think the belt had to stretch a bit thats all.
now its reaching 7-10psi by 2500rpm and full boost @ 3K with my evo3 16g. so im happy.

Well I did the 1 tooth retard cause I got bored and figured why not. It didnt increase spool it lagged it more by around 200-300rpm. full boost in 2nd by 4K and thats with a evo3 16g + ported to hell evo3 manifold.. Got misfire codes in dsmlink, got a horrible idle. got horrible vacuum. I dont recommend it unless you got adjustable cam gears. Just figured I would let you guys know so no one else reads this thread and decides to waste there time. I didnt feel any more topend either. thank god I wasnt feeling lazy and have it all retimed perfect now with perfect vac and fast spool.

It doesn't work as good on the 2G because your cams are already retarded slightly compared to the 1G exhaust cam, and the 2G cam has slightly more duration.

ah ok makes sense.

you should try going the other way with that. more power, better idle and fast spool.

maybe when I get some adjustable cam gears. right now I got regular ones. to much work to retard/advance etc. im letting it go for now.
