this is the third block i have bought in the last year that has ended up being bad. it looks like it has been recently rebuilt and has been sitting around for a bit as i examed it during tear down. so i guess what im getting at is this surface rust enough to make it burn oil. or ill the rings just wear this minor surface rust away???

I would empty the block, clean the rust with a red scuff pad, then hone the block and see how it looks. If it's not pitted afterwards, new rings and reassemble. If it looks bad it'll need bored.

You could try and see if it wears away , but rust is hard and could put tiny gouges in the rings, which is no good.

On a side note,I have had a tractor with a locked up motor, rust in cylinder, that i filled the jug with diesel. Let it sit over night and then drained oil, ect. New plug + some ether and it fired up and worked. Not that I'm recommending this way.

thanks for the advise. its what ill probably end up doing that. do you think i should just go ahead and reorder some new rings too? i dont exactly know how to look at see if they are bad...

Don't hone it with the ball type hone cause it will hide a lot of inperfection . Using the other type hone will show if the rings are scraping the walls properly . The only thing is it won't help if the cyliders are tapered.

Thanks for mentioning hone type, forgot about ball type.

It doesn't look to bad, but its not real clear. As far as being tapered, I guess what matters most are the the OP's intentions. Stock rebuild or going bigger?

if it was me i would tear it down and take it to the machine shop and ask them what they think. you could just hot tank it and get all the rust off then they will tell you if honing will work or if you have to bore it. i wouldnt order any rings untill that is done.

If the rust has pitted the cylinder, it will need bored.

The rust pits will hold oil and cause a smoke issue and also chew up the rings.

i tried to green scratchy it and i didnt have any luck. im going to tear her down and get it all taken care of. boooo for having to invest more money...

How should I go about this light surface rust inside the cylinder walls?

*edit* They feel fairly smooth to the naked finger. Super subtle. I just didn't know if anyone fired a car up like this before? I will retake pics in the morning. This was to get insight from early birds.

Going to harbor frieght tomorrow. Need to buy a crank puller as well.

That last pic looks pretty worn, aside from the rust. I'd probably have that one taken to a machinist.

Definitely take to a machinist and have them check it out. Too risky to build without having a pro go through it.

Yeah that doesn't look good. It wont cost much to have a machine shop (who specializes in high performance builds and has experience with turbo engines) mic the cylinders and hone the block.
