i tried using a snap on scanner to check codes and it said the computer couldnt communicate with it. wtf is up with that? what could the problem be?

I dont think they make a scanner for our year of car do they?? I just use a palm pilot to read and reset codes.
 
im assuming i can use it, i was able to select my car, and the connector it came with fit on my OBD 1 port.
