hi i just installed my engine back into my car recently...check thru the engine for boost leak and any oil or coolant leaks...none except a leak at the flex of the exhaust..the car idled perfectly...at start up there is no smoke at all even if it ran for a hour in idle....took it out to put gas in it an on the way home got on it hard to go into boost...when i came to a stop it would start smoking..then would go away as i started driving....did a compression test on it..had 165 across the all cylinders..checked turbo for shaft play was none also had it rebuilt over a year ago an didnt install it til now...pcv valve checked out ok...so i pull the head thinking it had to be something wrong with the head..when i remove the head i could see the #3 exhaust valve didnt shut completely...and the #2 intake valve didnt shut either...could that cause my smoke issue???

Are the cams still in? If compression was good then its just the way the cam lobes are oriented, keeping a few valves open. How old are the valve seals?

the valves not seating properly itself will not cause smoke but the issue causing the valves not to seat properly can cause smoke. If you are 100% sure that the cams are rotated properly to where the valve should be closed all the way then more than likely those valves might be bent which can cause the seals and quides to leak oil. I would look in the intake or exhaust port which ever one is bent with a flashlight to see if the top of the valves are wet with oil or not.

The head being on or off the car has nothing to do with the valves opening or closing. They way you are describing makes me believe you have some bent valves though.

the stems going into the valve guides looked gunked up stopping them from going back in all the way....thanks for the info guys...sending the head out for more info on it...just was wondering what else it could be if it wasnt the head was running out of solutions...

Compression would not have been good across the board if any valves were bent. OP stated 160+ on all cylinders. Stock head or was it rebuilt at sometime?

I have had a worn guide in my last head causing me smoking issues. Took the valve spring off and i could move the valve back and forth pretty bad. Similar to turbo shaft play.

Does it smoke under boost? If yes then I would check the oil feed line for the turbo. I just rebuilt my engine for a smoke issue and after rebuild it still smoked, so I researched the turbo oil feed line and moved it from the filter housing to the head and now it runs like a raped ape.

just to give everyone a update on my situation...took the head to a very well know machine shop here in long island and he just told me my problem was coming from 10 bad valve guides in my head...so he replace them all and seated the valves and did a 3 angle valve job for me...thanks everyone again for all there help an info....:D
