My eclipse has smoke coming out of the tailpipe. its not a lot, but it shouldnt be smoking like it is right now. Its a horrid smell. Oil change was done 200miles ago. there is a line of blackness on my rear bumper.

what should be done? whats wrong?

what color is the smoke, is it coming OUT of the exhaust like a gas, off of the muffler or off of the bumper, could be many different things and we need a bit more information to clarify what the problem could be

Sounds like your car was running rich (black on the bumper).....You blew your head gasket (white smoke), do a compression test, are you losing coolant? The horrid smell makes me think you are burning oil though, are you sure it doesn't have a blueish tint? Possibly a blown turbo it does have a blue tint to it.

a blown head gasket would cause white smoke to come out of tailpipe?

my car started to f@ck up really bad as of yesterday. car started to drop down to 200rpms, and I had to give it gas to go back to 800rpms. Oil temperate guage went between half and H. and drops down after very slowly.

Sounds like you have a head gasket to change! The smell could be that the head gasket is torn right between an oil gallery and a coolant gallery, and it is mixing and leaking into the combustion chamber. Check your oil, does it look like a cappuccino? thats signs of a head gasket. If it is dropping to 200-RPM let that baby die and call a tow truck. You don't want to hydro-lock the engine. I followed what these guys said, AAA is the best first upgrade to get for a DSM.

to change the head gasket. is it a hard job? would an average person be able to change the gasket himself?

An average person can do it, i did my First at age 12, but that was on an old Ford. DSM are very different. Changing a head gasket is not just pulling the head and replacing a gasket, theres technique to it. You need new head bolts to do the job correctly. Also you need to rent a torque wrench if you don't have one. for de-torque, move from the outside bolts in, and then torque the head bolts inside out while fastening the head. this will keep it from warping. Get a strait edge, a set of feeler gauges, check the head for warpage before putting on the head gasket. Do yourself a Favor and get alldata for your car. it's $25.99 for the year. Covers everything you need to know, gives you technical service bulletins (TSB's) and gives you step by step guides, component locations, even tells you the book hours the job would cost in a shop. Alldata is much more helpful than the owners manual and other than the AAA membership, this was my second upgrade for my car. If you plan on wrenching and are a first timer, follow the instructions and it will save you time and money in the long run.

If you can afford it I would recommend going to a shop and having them inspect the head before you install it. There could be warping that you won't notice without proper inspection. It could mean the difference between taking you head back off because the HG is not sealing due to a warped head. Which you do not want to have to do.

Yeah I had this problem not to long ago it was driving me nuts that it was smoking and I couldn't figure it out. then talking to the wife she had recently filled it up with reg unleaded.... Yeah needs premium and since then haven't noticed it. my car is black so couldn't tell you if my bumper had any black on it from the exhaust. Hopefully this was some help if not well there is lots of advice for ya above all sounds good.

rotten egg smell sounds like it's running way too rich and that sulpher (rotten egg) smell is due to unleaded fuel that is not being burnt off completely.

And with that, you got tonnage of sooty smoke coming out the tailpipe and with the vacuum that is created when vehicles are moving forward, that smoke rises up and sticks to the closest thing it can find ... the rear bumper.

Yeah, Sulpher smell normally is becuase your car is running in a rich condition. What type of fuel you running in it? Might try to lower the octane, or use a different oil. When you change your oil check if it's a milky color and check your coolant to make sure your mot losing any out the exhaust. Hopefully its just a rich condition not your headgasket. Also does it smoke when under WOT(wide open throttle) or all the time. Keep us posted.

I think im using 5w30. I changed the oil about 200 miles ago. It was smoking before I even did the oil change. It smokes when im standing behind a red light. When the throttle is wide open, it obviously smokes more. It could be coolant coming out of the exhaust pipe. Im running on regular gas.

Even sometimes, my rpms on the car drop to 300rpms and its trying to go back to normal. Id have to give it a lil gas. could it be that im losing pressure somewhere?

if its running rich, would it mean that there is a bad o2 sensor?
