1998 GST..all it has is an intake,1g bov and upper IC piping.. I just had a exhaust installed.. 2.5 piping(no cat) leading to a HKS Super Dragger muffler. The power increase is awesome and theres no smoke at WOT but the car smokes (grayish to light black) at idle at times..not all the time. the car has 120k miles on it and runs like a raped up. Maybe valve seals? Or does a catless car smoke like this. Also, my SEL light never came on nor has it come on ever since the cat was gone. Thanks for any help :)

Could just be burning off some crap inside the system, it may do this for a few minutes, if it is black, it is fuel, you are running ritch, lean it out some, if you do not have an AFC, do you have the screw backed out on your mass??If not back it out a half a turn, that will lean it a tad.

well i'll look into it... When I get close to the smoke it does have a slight burning oil kinda smell rather than a watery eye stich.. but it is grayish to light black in color. I have no leaks from the valve cover or anything. Thanks for the help!

sounds like some oil being burnt. Its sounds very small and you are noticeing it now because you have no cat. With the cat in there that small amount of oil would have been completly burnt in the cat and you wouldnt see any smoke now that there is not cat you are seeing the smoke. Try a compression test and let us know what your resutls are.

That happens sometimes when you go catless. White/blue smoke=oil, black/gray smoke= fuel. Definately do a compression test. Something else you could also check, due to the power increase, you might have blown a coupling, or maybe cracked a coupling, sounds like something small like that. A boost leak check should also be in order.......:dsm:

Your car might of always did that but the cat might of blocked some of it. Id just do a compression test and see how the results come out. Also make sure your turbo isnt going bad. Hope you figure it you.

thanks guys for the replies. I plan on doing a compression test this weekend hopefully. I did notice that the smoke does look grayish to a white color.. not white like head-gasket-blown-white, white with gray mixed in. The smell is defintely oil. As stated before, the car pulls awesome and theres no smoke whatsover during hard, moderate or slow acceleration...just idle. I'll also check for shaft play. 2 weeks ago I checked the turbo and there was no shaft play. The oil level is fine on the dipstick, the oil pressure is fine and the coolant temp gauge reads normal.

hmmm.. this may be a long shot.. but it might be the solution.. when i had the exhaust put on the o2 sensor was taken out from the original piping in place of 2.5 inch piping replacing the cat.. that O2 sensor is just tied with a twisty tie and tucked away.. I have no CEL code either. Would the o2 simmulator (resistor) mod possibly fix the smoking?? ..again, the car pulls awesome.. doesnt stutter or anything..at idle it blows out bluish to grayish smoke.. if I give it some gas in idle it'll sppear whiteish but then change back to bluish/gray with the smell of oil..no smoke at all at WOT or decel. Could the stock T25 be going bad even though it has VERY minimal shaft play and doesnt smoke at WOT? thanks :) 120k miles

It is possible, pull off the LICP coming from the turbo and see and feel if there is oil inside the LICP, If so then the seals in your turbo could be going bad. But I don't think so, if you have blackish grey smoke, that is fuel, not oil being burned, oil and water is white.

im pretty sure blueish smoke is oil. white is coolant, and blackish is fuel.

mine did the exact same thing man, but i knew i was burning a little oil before. after the exhaust (dejon 3" turboback) i noticed it A LOT more. all i did was run a little Lucas Oil Stabalizer. Didn't fix my oil burning, but it made it quite les noticable.

You are right bob is wrong oil burns a bluish grey color white is coolant and black is fuel. Likei said in my fisrt post you probally have always been burning some oil and just now noticed it because of no cat. What did you get for results with your compression test???
