I drive an 1996 eclipse gs-t and i just rebuild the bottom end of the motor.. new crank, bearings, piston rings, and re-bored the walls.. anyways i have a problem with the car smoking..

im not sure if it's the turbo seals, valve seals, or a draining issue with my turbo..

after a couple minutes of idling the car starts to smoke out of the exhaust, its defiantly oil too.. also once i get on it, and let off the gas, it will shoot out a huge puff of smoke.. when im actually accelerating there is no smoke.. it's only when i let off..

let me add the motor is completely stock.. 4g63 with 14b turbo..

let me know guys.. i'm thinking one of my drain hard lines is kinked... hmm

Did this start happening as soon as you started up/driving your new/built motor? Or is this something that has recently come on? It is possible you line could be kinked, and pushing oil by the turbo seals. Its also possible the seals on the turbine shaft are going bad. Has the turbo ever been rebuilt? If your motor is fresh i would probably start with the turbo, that is what it seems like.

If it happens to be your turbo, I have a couple extra used 14B cold sides that worked fine and blew no smoke before i pulled them off my cars, the hotsides are just cracked. I live 2 hours away from you, i could sell you one for super cheap if you need it. They are laying around taking up space in the garage.

Take off the 4 bolts holding the turbo to the manifold and open it some. crank the car if no smoke comes out then is the turbo. And like dirtydsm said take off the intake and check for shaft play and oil residue.

How many miles are on your car? Yes, I understand your bottom end has been rebuilt but you mention nothing of the head as to whether it's all original or not. Don't rule out valve stem seals. When my 91 GSX had around 95k miles on it I had to replace my seals because it looked like I was trying to "ninja vanish" every time I left from a stop sign or red light. Do a leak down test and rule a few things out before you start buying stuff.

*immortalmcf makes a good point. This is the route I'd have taken to rule out valves/rings had I not already did a leak down test when my issues arose a couple of years ago.

the turbo is off and being rebuilt, i sure hope its the turbo! Nothing on the head has been touched, and the mileage of the motor is unknown. The turbo does have some mild shaft play though, so hopefully the seals are just bad, because i do remember when i pulled the motor from the car that oil was dripping out of the compressor housing outlet of the turbo and there was a little oil in the intercooler.

The spark plugs look pretty normal, maybe a little rich, and i took a peak at the valves since i have the exhaust manifold off, i don't see any oil in there, so I feel like it is my turbo. OR maybe the valve seals on the intake side could be worn and dripping in from there?

We will see once the turbo is put back on..

NOTE: the car does not smoke on start-up, only smokes once it is warm.

This is what caught my eye, You say you re-bored the cylinder walls, did you take the block to a machine shop and have block bored? Or did you just hone it at home?

I re-honed the block at my house. no re-bored.. opps LOL...

if valve stems were leaky wouldn't my sparkplugs be black as ####?

once turbo is all said and done, going to slap it on the car, and just run thicker oil, maybe 10w-40? and some of that lucas oil treatment and pray for no smoke!

i had the same problem with my laser, only after letting it idle for a few mins it would start to smoke then cleare up once i drove it. the valve seals were bad.but i replaced the turbo and put new valve seals in at the sametime...LOL but yea i had no more smoke at all.valve seals are real cheap too just sucks you have to take off the head. good time for arps if you dont have them in already though :). GL

if the turbo is good and not leaking, and the compression is good as well, its most likely the valve stem seals, as mine does the same thing, puffs smoke @ idle but when acceleration it doesn't puff anything. thicker oil will only slow the problem, not solve it.

If not the turbo seals then 2nd most common thing is the valve stem seals. I see 3rd coming into mind that bogus is coming on to is how you rebuilt your block, you might have oil sneaking by causing you to burn oil. Now the smoke you see does it have a blueish tint to it? You might need to take into considering how you put your motor together before you jump to conclusions. Last but not least I can think of is make sure there are no oil kinks LOL? Are you using a rubber type flexible hose for your drain line instead of a 1g drain line? Make sure no oil leaks to boot. I don't wanna jynx you hope it's just the turbo. :D I hated blown turbos I would be idling through the fast food drive through and pissing out smoke at idle, it was embarrassing.:(
