Smell from rear diff?

I just purchased a bone stock '99 gsx 5spd w/ 70k on it. I've noticed sometimes that when I get on it hard, after I park the car, there is this strong smell like burnt clutch. However, it's not the clutch, and it seems to be originating from the rear of the car. Any ideas? Could it be the rear diff?

it could be the rear brakes maybe there dragging or if there new sometimes they tend to smell like a burnt clutch explecally if they wernt brake cleaned before getting put on from the coating they out on them from the factory

haha or it could be that too but if its not that take a woof around that rotor and see if its that

I would recommend getting your rear diff fluid changes just as a precaution. Hell, get all of your fluids changed. Front to back. You will thank me latter. But then hate me first when you have a hell of a time getting the air bubbles out of your cooling system .

+ on that above ^ yea ha thats always fun gettin the air bubbles out and just slowly pooring the antifreeze into the thermostate housing and constanly checking the dash for that low coolant light to go away but yes indeed you should replace all of your fluids whenever you buy a new used car even if the previous owner had just done it like change the oil yea it looks like it was just dont but who knows if it was done rite its not going to look to clean if it was done wrong and your oil pumps sceizd up or what not so just for the future it would be a very good idea to replace all the fluids

Thanks for all the suggestions guys...these are all very helpful. I'm guessing the rear brake theory is the most likely, as it smells like its coming from the wheel area.
