at 5,000 rpm or higher I get small popping backfires while slowing down. no loss in power and not while i'm in the gas. to my knowledge it's unspent gas ending up in my pipes. what would be the way to fix this problem.

Look into the ignition system. Check wires, plugs (see what condition there in –will tell you how your car is running) and coil pack (check ohmage). Start there and make sure you car is burning the gas properly.

Very good place to start, Rafiel.

Other possible culprits could be:
-TPS not showing closed correctly.
-VSS not functioning (speedomter would also not work, in this case)
-Leaky injectors

Your car could just be running rich, a lot of cars backfire under deceleration
I enjoy a nice backfire every now and then

It is not normal for a DSM.

DSMs cut fuel during decel. A backfire during decel means there is fuel when there shouldn't be, for one reason or another.
