sludge in overflow tank?

so couple days ago i opened my overflow tank and noticed that it was a brown gooey sludge inside? i flushed the radiator and rinsed out the overflow real good. ( due to laziness and lack of time i didnt flush the block ) I rubbed my fingers where the upper radiator hose attaches to the motor and the coolant was clear. also did the same where the lower radiator hose attaches and same results. thought the block was clean so i put some new coolant in. yesterday i get home from work and found out i had a hole in my upper radiator hose and theres the sludgy coolant leaking out. jus put in a new hose/clamps and im going to be flushing out the block and radiator again later today. jus kinda wonderin what could be causing this?
 
ugh update::

so today im drivin back from gettin zip ties and my car overheats. get it home and the pipe going to the overflow is pouring out STEAM!. let it cool off and bought a new thermostat and gasket. took all the thermostat housing off and tookout the old thermostat. put back on the housing w/o the thermostat and and reflushed the entire system. put everythin back together (left the thermostat off) with some new coolant and drives fine. THERE IS ONE OF 3 PROBLEMS:
1. bad HG
2. oil cooler
3. sludge left in there and water hose doesn't make enough pressure to push it all out.

the plan:
1. get it proffesionally power flushed
2. while thats happening do a compression test to findout if its a bad HG
3. if compression test comesback good i'm taking it to the local raceshop and payin 65$ to tell me exactly what the problem is

i got the saem sludge when i didnt flush my coolant system completely when putting in a different kind of coolant. I reflushed it with distilled water and there was no sludge after that
 
UPDATE: did a power flush awhile back and today the car overheated and the SLUDGE IS BACK. did a compression test (175 across the board=HG is good) so it could definently be the oil cooler. takin the car to a local race shop and i know the guys there will figure it out. any other suggestions besides oil cooler?

I said a while back it has to be oil lines, and im 99.99% sure thats it. good luck man
 
Is it this is the oil cooler that you all mentioned? Can we bypass and don't use the oil cooler and use the external or side mount oil cooler?

Good compression does not mean the head gasket is good. Good compression means you have good rings and valves. You can lose compression because of a head gasket, but it's far from guaranteed. A bad head gasket could cause: pushing out coolant (cauing overheating), coolant into combustion chamber (not good for engine), oil in coolant (gross looking coolant), coolant in oil (very bad for bearings), or low compression (mostly if its blown between cylinders).

It's either your head gasket or your oil cooler on the oil filter housing. Plug the coolant lines going to the oil cooler and see if that helps. If you can do the work yourself, all changing the head gasket costs you is some time and $30 for a headgasket.
