I have a 99 gst that I bought with the 6 bolt swap that was done half a##ed and I have spent the last 2 months triing to get everything fixed and worked out. I have pretty much fixed everything except for the timing on the cas. I bought a data logger just for this and when I went to try and set the timing it was nowhere even close and no matter how far I adjust the 1g cas the timing mark on the harmonic balancer won't even get near the timing marks on the timing cover. I checked the wiring where the cas is spliced in and everything seems to be in order and i also checked the timing itself probably 4 or 5 times and everything looks good. I was wondering if there is a difference between turbo and non turbo cam angle sensors and also if there is a difference between 1g and 2g harmonic balancers turbo or non turbo. Could a wrong cas be the cause for this problem or is there something else that i am unaware of. I would really appreciate any info or ideas that anyone has to offer because I am to the point that if I can't figure something out soon I am going to sale and be done with it. The reason for the turbo and non turbo ?'s is because who ever done this swap didn't change half of the things that the swap called for. They tried to use a non turbo cluth and flywheel, wrong starter, wrong water pipe, and wrong thermostat housing. thanks for any help

Sounds like a nightmare, Well I can tell you that the harmonic balancers are the same, also all three of the 1g cas should work, ive even seen some people use the cas from galant's

I know you said you checked the timing belt itself but it can be off 1tooth and it is Very hard to tell it sometimes, I really do think that must be where your problem is, but I could be wrong.

Here is my favorite tech article for the timing belt, it helped me a lot.

Also here is a good quote from it, look at this section:

"Here is a thread explaining a bit more on why all 4 gear marks do not necessarily line up in a perfectly straight line. Given some calculations (and just by experience) It is not a 180* affair, but more along the lines of 176* or so. The most important thing to understand is that the two center marks need to be parallel to the head surface (and of course each other)"

Well you want the timing marks to all pretty much be lined up perfect, for instance, if you go one more tooth to the left or right of the mark... does it make it even closer or farther.... sometimes things are just BARELY off and this is normal... just ask yourself.. would it get any closer if i moved that gear over a tooth or not.

What I like to do after setting the time and tightening the tensioner is rotate the engine over once all the way back to Top dead center to where the timing marks are and then double check my timing job... usually by rotating it over any slack or variations in alignment even out to where they will be when the motor is running, and you can better tell after rotating it over back to top dead center again weather or not your marks are good.

Don't know if this could've happened but it is plausible if the guy was a complete idiot. The harmonic Balancer might not have been installed proplerley at TDC. You should pull a plug and check for TDC and where your timing markes are.

I have checked the timing belt and the timing is dead on no doubt. The problem is that when you bring it up tdc the timing mark on the harmonic balancer turning clockwise lacks an inch being neer the timing marks on the timing cover. This is my delima because i don't see how this is possible because the crank gear and the timing plate behind it are on a woodruff key other wise stationary . I am thinking about taking it back down and seeing if they have done something to the timing plate that goes behind the crank gear. Does anyone have any ideas on how this is possible. thanks for any replies

I think i just figured out what happened, when they put the belt gear back on the crank they plipped the timing plate before they put it back on. which puts it 45 degrees or more off the correct timing mark. I took the timing back down and brought it back up TDC with #1 piston and checked it and it was dead on. So thanks to everyone for the replies much appreciated

Take that damper off, that way you can inspect it to see if it spun and you can also look to see if the timing lines up; you should be able to see the timing mark under the timing cover.
