Should the car be able to run with the intake totally blocked of air?

Stupid and dangerous question, and I don't want to get into the details atm I've just been dealing with this issue for like 8 months and I can't stand it anymore. It's idling at like 4500rpm.

I just need to know whether a 420a can, with the throttle body TOTALLY blocked off with a piece of dense plastic or something, idle at 2500rpm? Because that's what happens.

Because if it should suffocate and die, then It confirms that I've got a massive gasket leak somewhere.

if you can keep the car running with the intake blocked off completely, then yes, you have a massive leak. since it is map based, and a huge leak would kick up ## fuel along with the extra air. so yea, look for an unhooked vacuum line or more likely a bad gasket. hopefully not a hole in the manifold.

You could hook up a leak tester to your intake instead...

check your throttle body adjustment screw as well if the valve is open too far it will let in a lot of air

You could hook up a leak tester to your intake instead...

what he said. blocking it off just comes off as risky in my opinion. Its safer to use a leak tester then if you do have a gasket leak or even dare I say, a crack in the manifold. you won't harm your car in any form.

K. I don't own a leak tester so I'd have to find one somewhere. I tried testing my vacuum lines, both by checking the routing and by blocking off each one by one at the manifold, and it didn't make a difference.

I'm pretty confident It's one of the intake manifold gaskets at this point, so I guess I'll start down that road. I hear they're terrible job without pulling the engine.

Well I know how the combustion works, but what I meant was 'is there any other place it could get enough air from (like a vacuum hose or the egr or something).

umm, no.. If you block off the throttle body the engine should die and not run. If it does you have a massive leak at the throttle body or intake manifold.
