Should I rebuild my turbo ??

I have a 95 tsi awd turbo .my mechanic says my turbo is going bad and should replace it soon.so my question is would a rebuild kit fix the problem.it's still boosting but it won't last long acording to him.anywAys.what do u guys think??
 
another option is the direct bolt on 20g. It all depends on budget. You can pick up a used 14b for cheap (about the same price of rebuilding your turbo). You will aslo have to buy the install kit for it around $100. 16gs can range for 300-600. The 300$ ones are cheap chines turbos you get whatyou pay for. The 600$ ones are genuine mhi. You still need the install kit. A 20g will run about $800. It is a direct bolt on. You can get 16gs and 20gs cheaper used but they are harder to find in good shape. All prices are aproximate prices.

That turbo wont fit your stock manifold.

Your "mechanic" says it wont last long, did he give you a reason? Check the turbo for shaftplay before you spend money that you don't need to.
 
I just ordered a rebuild kit for my T25, you might want to get it balanced as well.
No need to rebalance a turbo at the time of a rebuild if there is no wheel damage. It's a waste of time and money.

If the compressor locknut has balance grinds, be sure to mark the alignment of the locknut and the compressor wheel so they correspond when the turbo is reassembled or balance will be compromised.

Don't you think a 20G is a little much for an otherwise stock car? I could list about $2500 worth of additional upgrades that would be necessary to make a 20G worth having.

Are you seriously asking if a $170 turbo is a good option for your car?
 
I was under the impression that you had to balance after any rebuild work done to a turbo? Well cool if only needs a balance if there's damage.

If there's no wheel damage, there's nothing that balancing will correct.

Anytime you're working with a turbo that has had the whole CHRA balanced as an assembly from the factory (noted by the balance grinds on the locknut because you cannot grind the backside of the wheels once the turbo is assembled) then chances are it's balanced better prior to dis assembly than if you were to low-speed balance the parts on a TurboPac.

If the turbo is component-balanced the locknut will not have balance grinds and you're free to clock the wheels however you want without compromising the balance of the rotating assembly. If there are balance grinds on the locknut, alignment of the wheels are crucial.
