Whats up guys.. Ok here is the situation.. I jus recieved my SBR G50 turbo.. Its has not been ported. Im planning on running arond 20psi on pump daily. my Question is should i port it myself? I called Slowbowracing and he said i should be fine at 20 with no creep.. I have a nice ported evo3 o2 housing now.. What do you guys think i should do.. Just put it on an see what happens? or port it a little bit? thanks guys :thumb:

Eric

I would put it on as is, if you take the exhaust housing off and port it, this could void the warranty!

Sell this turbo while you can.....
We've sent 2 back already because they blow the seals, and the 2nd one they did not warranty.

We purchased our g50 from Kinetic, but they are the same as the Sbr g50.

Really?? well i dont think i will have problems with this one.. I HOPE i dont.. I have red both good and bad things on this turbo.. some say this some say that.. but some people have been running for a long time with 0 issues.. some have alot.. Its either hit or miss they say.. and ima stay positive.. for 500 bucks brand new cant beat it.. i do appreciate the reply and advice.. well see what happens

The T31 turbine housings that SBR uses are already cast "ported". There's no sealing ring lip to remove like you'd find in a factory MHI housing. You can clean up the casting flaws with a dremel and a flap wheel, but that's about all the porting that this turbo would require.

You're going to want to either feed this turbo unrestricted from the head or from the filter housing with a .063" restrictor to keep it alive. Those who are running theirs unrestricted from the filter housing either have oil drains the size of a fire hose or they're on borrowed time. Too much oil pressure and not enough drainage will kill this turbo in a hurry....don't say you weren't warned! :D

Ok about the porting.. I noticed the flapper doesnt open all the way.. should i make it so it will open further?? it looks like it could be a problem to me..

And What is a .063" restrictor and where can i get one...?? I do plan on just running it how i had my Evo3 16g ran from the Oil filter housing.. And i also heard these NEED to be ran from the OFH is that true? Where on the head would you run it from?? Im takin my time on the install so no rush.. i need as much advice as i can get do to the fact its my first ever 50 trim :thumb:

So i see.. the OFH feeds it to fast and the oil can not drain out of the turbo fast enough which causes exsessive presure inside right?? and thats why people go through these fast right? thanks ALOT for the advice and do please keep it coming.. its much appreciated :thumb:

I had bad luck with a g50! Could not keep seals in it. Maybe you will have better luck!

I can't help with the porting, mine is run with an external.

As far as the oiling, mine is off the oil filter housing unrestricted, and the first season my return tube was kinked a bit. Went through about a quart of oil in 4-500 miles, and as much as a quart in one track weekend. With no changes other than unkinking the return, it doesn't use any oil between changes.

Hope this helps.

Dave, yours was fed unrestricted from the filter housing if I recall....no doubt the source of your oiling issues.

Thats what slowboy said to do with it! It probably wouldn't of happend if i ran it from the head!

Ok.. well i just got off the phone with slowboy.. they said its a journel bearing turbo which is like the MHI Evo3 16g.. so i can run it either from the head or OFH.. without a restricter.. Ok.. so for those who run it from the head. where exactly do you run it from?? thanks all :thumb:

Eric

Passenger's side front corner of the head, there's a 10mm x 1.25 bolt plugging the oil supply hole that normally leads to the TD05H turbos on 1G's.

You'll need a 10mm x 1.25 banjo bolt to replace the plug, as well as two copper sealing washers. If you buy this kit from Extreme PSI it will come with everything you need:

EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - Oil Feedline Kit (Head Location): Mitsubishi Eclipse 90-99

Select "PTE / Garrett Journal Bearing" as your fitting option.

Thats a nice kit... Im thinkin of jus running it from the housing.. since its already set up for it.. I have a nice size return hose so im thinking i should be ok... If its Journal bearing like my evo3 then it should be ok

If its Journal bearing like my evo3 then it should be ok
Every turbo is different, every engine is different in regards to oil pressure. If it smokes even a little bit at the filter housing, move the oil supply immediately or you'll murder your nice new turbo.

Keep in mind Evo III center housings have built-in restrictors, but sometimes this still isn't enough to reduce the oil pressure to safe levels without a restrictor.

I never knew they looked that different.. Thanks alot for posting those pictures..

Ok.. well if i do do it from the head... Isnt the head the last place to get oil?? will it not be enough? and how would I go about Plugging where its ran from the OFH?? Thanks for the help.. Its much apprecitated :thumb:

Eric

Cool that makes me feel better.. Well i do appreciate all the advice man.. Thanks again.. Ill keep you posted when i do the install.. ill take alot of pictures an post them as i go through the install.. Until then thanks bro :thumb:

After careful consideration, I'm going to make a restrictor. I'm thinking that an overabundance of oil volume is possibly the reason that I never hear any audible "spool down" sounds, even with a very open exhaust system. I'd also rather not kill this turbo prematurely for the lack of something I can make for free.

Who knows, maybe I'll see a tiny bit quicker spool up too.

Yup.. sound like a good idea.. I just decided to run the feed unrestricted from the head.. to ME it sounds like the safest place.. Jusmx141 convinced me very well LOL

But ya.. and the fact SHEP runs it from the head as well.. so I HIGHLY doubt its not enough oil like some people say.. good luck bro.. let me know how the spool is with the restrictor :thumb:
