Should I get a longblock or use bolt ons?

Hi, I've been around DSMs for a while now, but I haven't quite picked up what I really would like to know. I have looked through the threads and gotten a lot of useful information, but I'm not sure if I can actually apply it to myself. I have an end goal of about 450whp on my AWD. I read that stock blocks can handle around 400-450hp. I would really like to drive my DSM fairly reliably (Oh, and it'll be mostly street driven).

With all that being said, should I shell out for a SBR longblock or should I just go with the upgrade methods on my stock block (It's about a 1,400 mile rebuilt block).

I would be very leary about running 450hp on a stock rotating assembly... thats just me though... i wouldnt shell out the cash for slowboys motor though... i have the same goal as you heres the block i got

With a good tune, the stock blocks can handle a good amount of abuse. Even the stock headgaskets are pretty tough, as long as you get some ARP headstuds. As long as your motor is in good shape, good compression, not burning anything, you should be alright. At that power level, ECMlink would be a good thing to look at for tuning, or Jackal as another option. Keep the AFRs and timing relatively conservative (not too conservative!! ) and you shouldn't have too many problems.

Heheh, I just wanted to have a sort of game plan before I started doing anything. I'm leaning more towards starting with the upgrade path. I'm hoping a 20G will be all I need to reach my goal. If memory serves me correctly, they are good for around 450hp. I'm glad I was led to the DSM Graveyard site as well. I didn't even come across it in my searches.
