If the previous has been that oil for awhile, than continue to use it, even though it is expensive. You could get a thousand arguments on oil weights, but 15w-50 will be fine. I've also read that you shouldn't switch back and forth between regular and synthetic. If you run synthetic, stick with it.
I personally have always ran 15w-40 diesel oil in all of my dsm's. Yes it is approved for gasoline engines.

well the oil does say Mobil 1 15W-50 is recommended for high performance vehicles including turbocharged and supercharged engines where a thicker oil film is desired.

15w50 is too thick. Stick with 10w30 - that's what the service manual recommends for your engine. You can stick with Mobil 1, or switch to Amsoil if it's not good enough for you. If you'd like more information on oil, I recommend this page:

diesel oil huh? whats the benefit of using that?

The benefits are that semi-trucks run at a lot more boost than my dsm for a lot longer. They sit and run all day and they don't change the oil for well more than 10k miles. Also it has some zinc in it which is good as well. It doesn't break down easily. It is also pretty cheap. I've been using it for years with good success. I can't justify the cost of synthetic for my dsm's.

well i dont wanna switch to a lower grade since the previous owner been using it for a couple years...plus they say thicker is best to use in a higher mileage engine car....i mean the car runs fine with it and lookin at the inside of the engine the parts look brand new so that oil has to be doin good for it...i just dont wanna switch to 10w-40 or 30 and the engine starts makin noises or somethin changes.

If it works fine for you use it. You're going to have people say its too thick, but you'll be fine.

I never thought of it that way. You convinced me to switch when i rebuild in a few months.

I love rotella t 5w-40 synthetic. Very good stuff. Gasoline oils have been being stripped of the additives for years because of emissions. Diesel oils usually have a better anti wear package.

I've used Shell Rotella, Mobil Delvac, and new Valvoline Blue something which is supposed to be really good.

Think with your dipstick Jimmy!

I use nothing but Rotella in my Dump truck. Never thought about using it my car. Just castrol 10w-30

It says its approved for gasoline engines. I figure that diesels are typically run under much harsher conditions as well as last lots of miles and the oil has to be pretty good stuff to hold up.
When someone starts sponsoring me and paying for my engines, i'll run the oil they think is best:rolleyes:
I've been doing this for years in multiple dsm's with great success:thumb:
I'm not saying its better than anything else, it's just what I run and I was asked why I run it. Regular 10w-30 is just fine and i'm sure gets the job done as well

Put it this way. A typical work day for my dump truck consists of me starting the truck up at 5:30 a.m driving 20 miles to the quarry. Get loaded to were the truck is grossed at 57k pounds and hauling that material to the job site 15-20 miles bla bla bla lots of stop and go and high heavy boost ( I think 30 PSI on my Cat) and then I get to the job site that most of the time is just a dirt spot and in the dry periods we get in the summer it turns into our own little dust bowl. All that dirt I suck into the motor all day long and work until 5-6 pm at night putting on 300-500 miles a day with out shutting off the truck and we change the oil every 10k miles.

When It comes out it looks like crude oil but I dont leak any at all and have no metal in my oil.

that being said I know for a FACT that rotella is a very very good oil.

Rotella is definitely good stuff. I had a guy tell me years ago that he worked for a company that did all these independent wear tests on Delvac and he said it did amazing. I'm sure they are pretty damn close and it doesn't matter which one of them you run, they have to meet the same specifications pretty much. I've been using the Rotella for the most part, I usually get whichever is cheaper between the ones i listed a few posts up.
