well....in about 300 miles, i am due for another oil change, the first one i did i put mobil 1 supersyn 10w-30 in it, with a napa silver filter, i read the mobil 1 site, and they said that they recommend their special filter for this oil, how many of you guys actually use the filter? and should i go to a 5w-30 supersyn for winter?

i use supersyn. with a regular oem filter, even if i WANTED to use the special filter it's not even sold here... considering they sell Titan super synthetic (dunno if u have it on that side of the pond) and other stuff but no "special" filter it can't be that important..

besides i change my oil and filter.. at least 2x as often as recommended(every 5,000Km's rather then 10,000)... and change the filter each time....can't go wrong :thumb:

I use to work at an oil change location that dealt soley with Mobil products....what we would do is try to upsell the Mobil 1 filter with the Mobil 1 synthetic oil because that filter is ment to go twice the interval (6,000 miles) as is the oil. If the customer didn't want that filter what we would do is use the regular filter and tell them to come back at 3,000 miles and we would change the filter and top off the oil. Reason being, to a cetain extent, the oil after a period of time is only as good as the filter that's filtering it.

When selecting an oil filter you should research the how many microns it can filter down too. (Lower the number, the better the filter) I believe mobil1 filters are rated at 10-15microns. More filtering also means less oil flow. Which is not good for obvious reasons.

However, if you buy a quality oil filter, like a mobil1 filter, K&N or whatever. It will be able to provide good flow as well as filter out a high level of metal shavings floating around in your engine which can damage bearings, cylinder walls, etc. A good filter can also save your turbo as well as your engine in the event that something may go wrong.

thanks guys, someday when its nice i will change all my fluids, (transmission, transfercase, differential, engine, then bleed my brakes and clutch i spose to get it ready for winter)

i was using a mobil 1 filter on my TSI for like my first two oil changes then my lifter tick began to get worse, i replaced it with a dealership filter and the tick subsided greatly i recommend it too all my DSM buddies i don't think i'll ever go back.... i read on this site that the mitsu filter will actually hold pressure in the head longer and at the same time is most likely the best filtering filter out there for our cars.. correct me i'm wrong but i tried it out and liked the results.

Thats what i hear about most OEM filters....especially with the Honda filters.....I guess you really do get what you pay for , especially when it comes to anything OEM.

if you wanna get rid of the 2G lifter tick just get a thicker oil. I use a 10-40W and i dont have anymore ticking. I have even heard some ppl use 20-50W too OMG but that is too thick in my opinion :dsm:

I use 10W30 unless it gets really cold out. But I don't drive mine in the winter. I understand that 5W30 has way too many additives/polymers added.

Many people are using a product made my Lucas to put a stop to ticking lifters. Give that a shot on your next oil change. I've heard great things about it put I prefer to use straight 10W30 Syn

I would stick with the 10/30 synthetic year round. The oil flows alot faster than a convertional 10/30. As far as filters DONT use fram. Use eather napa silver or gold, wix , K&N, or mobil 1.

heh thats what I use.. Valvoline VR1 Racing 20-50 w/ K&N filter. Never gets that cold here and thats the oil I used with my RX7 so I just stuck with it.

RRE says 20-50 and whatever RRE says is ok with me. Unfortunately, mobil 1 doesn't make a 20-50 anymore, but they do make a 15-50 full synthetic which is a little thinner so it solves that thickness issue that people seem to have.

Out of curiosity, how is your gas mileage with the 20-50??? I would think it would be quite a bit lower than normal b/c the engines /pump is working harder , especially at startup to move the oil out of the pan and through all the passages.
