Edm,
Where can I get shims for the dual piston calipers?
I know they come with the oem pads, but is there any way to purchase them seperatly?
I went to NAPA today, and they had shims but there were only two in the package and they didn't adapt to the pads in any way. how many shims do I need? and what do they look like, here is a pic of what the NAPA shims looked like

thanks for the reply.
So the shims are the thin sheets of metal on the back of the pads?
because these hawk pads come with those.
I guess I just need the clips then? does a set come with 2 or 4 clips?
I take it the clips are the things between the two pads on the left side of the pic?

Yes, the shims are the parts that go in the back of the pads.
IIRC, the dual piston calipers use clips that are tied together across the inner and outer side of the mounting bracket, so there are a total of 4 between the 2 calipers. The clips fit into the mounting brackets where the tabs on the pads fit, so you have a top and botton clip that snaps into both sides of the mounting bracket (inner and outer).

Thread from the dead!

I'm in process of doing the DPC upgrade for my 99GST. I heard that the caliper clips from my stock brakes will transfer over to the AWD brakes. Can anyone verify this for me?

Thanks in advance!

If you are talking about the pad clips (the U-shaped clips) that go at the ends of the pads, they will not transfer. The caliper brackets are different sizes than the stock 1 piston calipers. The only thing that'll transfer over are the lock and guide bolts. If you have any more questions, let me know as I just did the dual piston upgrade on my GST.

What type of grease/ how much did you use on the lock/guide pins?

I imagine the brake bias gets shifted to the front. Did you do any mods to the proportioning valve? How does the balance feel? How much better is the braking performance with good pads and fluid? (I've found good, fresh fluid and properly bled system makes a world of difference).

Well, the GSX's came stock with the DPC's so the brake bias shift isn't huge I would imagine. (BTW I'm snowborder714's brother). We did no mods to the proportioning valve and I have never heard of anyone doing that. I can't really comment on the the increase in performance because he bought the car with crappy stock brakes on it and we upgraded to Powerslot rotors, MetalMaster pads, Motul brake fluid, RRE ss brake lines, and the DPC's all at once (plus we rebuilt all 4 calipers). Needless to say, the braking improved dramatically but I don't know how much of it was due to the calipers. As far as how the balance feels, neither him or I have really pushed the brakes hard because the car has been down for most of the time since we put the new brakes on. The brakes felt strong all through the break-in process and since I have only braked hard on it once and it performed amazing!

Whoa i bet those brakes are sick!

How hard is it to rebuild a caliper? My rear caliper piston is so freaking hard to get to retract into its bore, and the pad isnt hitting the full disc face. :toobad:

Hopefully once we get the car running again we can test them to their full potential. I wouldn't call them sick, just a mild upgrade. The way I see it, no sense in spending the big bucks on the big brake kits when they're going to need to be replaced someday anyways. We have better mods to spend money on at this point.

Honestly, it was hard to rebuild the calipers. Now that I've done it once, I'll bet I could do it 30x faster if I had to again. I posted on some threads about it, give me a minute to find them.
