I have a 95 Talon TSI AWD. The transmission was supposedly rebuilt recently by the previous owner, but apparently he did a bad job. He forgot to replace the synchros in 2nd gear, which explains the grinding when I shift too fast. But sometimes, especially if I'm rolling, it is very hard if not impossible to get it into 1st. Sometimes the shifter will get about halfway in, but not fully engage and I'll have to start off in 2nd. Reverse does not always go in all the way either. The weird thing I've noticed though, is that when I let off the brake for a second while attempting to shift into first or reverse it'll go in.

Also, go to vfaq.com or RRE's page and read the cluthc adjustment pages, your tranny might be fine but suffering from a poorly adjusted clutch. Mine was so far out one time that when i adjusted it , i thought i had put in a new tranny.

hey, i just installed a brand new act 2600 and streetlight flywheel, fresh rebuilt tranny, and adjusted the clutch and its still hard sometimes to get into first when rolling, i think its just a common thing with these cars, everyone i've been in has that problem...just have to come to full stops at stop signs, haha!

Be sure the bracket on the transmission is properly adjusted. With it disconnected, you want the stick shift exactly in the middle and the transmission in neutral. Have a friend hold the stick steady while you adjust the cable bracket on the trans.
