Transmission and shift cable problems!

OK, so first off thanks for accepting me. I just bought my 97 eclipse gs it is the 420a 2.0 5-speed. I love the car but a few days ago I started loosing 2nd 4th and reverse. So I noticed the bushing on the shift cable( transmission side) was worn out. I get to Autozone yesterday pulled the shift cable off in neutral to try to get a bushing. Got the bushing put it all back together to find it was stuck in 1st gear after hours of trying to get it to shift I get it to move to 5th gear but car won't move while running. Long story shorter the shifter and the transmission are both locked in 5th now and I drove home in 5th gear only after taking and leaving the shift cable unhooked does anyone have a clue as to what went wrong? Or how to get the transmission and shifter back in neutral. I think the shift cable is bound. I'm buying a new shift cable on Saturday.

Have you tried the shift levers under the hood on the tranny?

i would try unhooking both cables from the transmission, and with the car off try to manually engage all the gears from the linkage straight off the transmission. if the transmission itself shifts fine that will at least
narrow you down so you can decide whether its a transmission problem or a linkage problem.

Also as far as new cable end bushings, I highly doubt that your local autoparts store will have anything. I would suggest any of the cable end bushings on this page:
