Hi all.

been lurking on this forum for a while. Thanks to all of you who have the patience for us noobs.

I recently decided to put some work ($$) into my 1990 Eagle Talon TSI.

It's bone stock with 179,000km on it.

I had the engine rebuilt (top and bottom) at around 165,000km by a local shop (in 2007...LOL)

I hit a bump and my unsecured battery fused to the hood so I just parked it about year later...I can't even remember what the issues were but I had no time and no money then.

I recently (as a glutton for punishment) decided to see if I can get her back to her former (stock) glory with a bit more time and some cash to throw at it.

Have replaced wires and plugs (gapped to .028), drained gas, recharged the K&N, oil change and a new battery and it started right up.

I'm currently having what seems to be a common issue where it idles good once warmed up but won't rev past 2500-3000 rpm UNLESS I unplug the MAS and then it will rev fine but dies on idle.

No CEL until I unplug the MAS.

ECU is in great shape from a visual inspection.

Hoping to check my compression and do a boost leak test to get a little more info and go from there.

I am leaning towards replacing my MAF and seeing how it goes though...

Any thoughts?

Would be nice to know someone that you could "borrow" a MAF from to verify that you have a problem with yours. They are so bulky, they are hard to ship for a test.
Glad to see you have some enthusiasm about the car again and welcome!
Do us all a favor and fill out a profile so we can know all the stuff you know. :)

Don't throw parts at it. Find out why it doesn't run well. Look at fuel trims etc and rule out basic stuff. Remember computers are dumb. If you unplug maf computer failsafes to something else. This does NOT mean your maf is bad. It means it could be.. A data log etc would be your friend. Could be any number of sensors bad and unplugging the maf masks the root cause. Check the harness since it sat for so long. Rodent damage is a possibility. Sometimes parts are cheap and easy to change so by all means throw a part at it but using that method as the only method of diagnosis is expensive and there are better ways since we have ecu access.

I've done all the easy stuff.
Visual and audio inspection, cleaning and swapping all the easy stuff.

I have not done my fuel filter yet, it's the only thing that comes to mind but since I am running hella rich (my new plugs are already black and i blew through a 1/4 tank just idling and revving for testing) that I think it's an air flow issue and not a fuel issue (in the sense that my dsm clearly thinks there is more air than there is and is giving me way more fuel to compensate).

Hopefully that's not too presumptuous.

Getting a dsm link is something I'm probably not ready to do, mostly because I don't really plan on having more than a good running, stock vehicle and my CEL light does not come on.

I may whip up an led blinker sometime soon though.

The big things I still need to do are a compression test and a boost leak test which I will do this weekend.

Barring any new info from these tests, I'll try to swap the MAS.

I'm totally in agreement that an ounce of research is worth a pound of parts but eventually, you do have to take a swing. Especially if you don't have all of the tools to diagnose properly...

As far as borrowing, I barely have any friends (old man syndrome), let alone any with a DSM.

Appreciate the good advice here. Thanks to all and keep it coming....
