hey guys thanks for looking. i just bought a 1998 eclipse egsx. imports arent really my thing but i always wanted one in highschool and couldnt pass it up. so when i bought it the guy said the headlights wouldnt turn off and the horn blew constantly so he pulled the fuses. I drove it around till it got dark and when i put the headlight fuse in it blew the alternator fuse. replaced it and everything worked fine. Next day i put a cd player in, the radio would work fine in my hand but when i put it in the hole it wouldnt get reception, so i said whatever i got cds. drove it for a month witht no trouble. the other day me and my son were driving it and all the sudden the windsheild wipers came on really fast, then the car died and smoke rolled out of the dash by the radio. i pulled over and popped the hood and the battery was smoking. put a different battery in and still nothing, most of the fuses under the dash were blown so i replaced them. now everything works in the car but the stereo (no power to yellow wire) pretty sure the smoke came from the box under the center councel cause it smells fried. and the wires going to the rear defrost had been farmer fixed and started to smoke so i unhooked them quick. the car will turn over but not start! it sounds like the fuel pump isnt running. some places say the relay is in the passanger side center councel, some the fireway, and some under the seat but i cant find it. also i dont want to replace all this stuff just for it to happen again, how to i find out what went wrong and fix it?? any help would be greatly appreciated. my son lives 45 minutes away and its the only vehicle i have to get him for visits.. thanks guys

ok so i had a buddy come over, he said theres no spark and and power to the fuel. he thinks the computer is shot. does this sound right? anyone know were to get them?

None of the things in your first post except engine not starting have anything to do with the ECU. You have some serious intermittent shorts there - perhaps some wires are exposed and intermittently touching metal somewhere. Considering all the many wierd shorts you have, I would suggest disconnecting battery, unbolting the engine fusebox, and look underneath it at the mass of wires there. Look for shorts, burnt wires, insulation scraped off, etc.

Before spending hundreds on a new ECU, I suggest testing the CAS. The CAS tells the ECU, among other things, to enable the fuel pump (FP). FP doesn't run if engine is not spinning (CAS operating). For spark, the ECU needs signals from both CAS and CPS as well as working coils and power transistors. Tests for above: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...art-no-fuel-prime-no-spark.html#post151265626.

what are the CAS and CPS? i will pull the fuse box out later today, also i wanted to add that my freind who came over tried to hook up his code reader to the car, and it wouldnt scan it, i think it said connection failure or something of the sort. Also i dont know if it would have anything to do with it but the last few days i drove it the car smelled bad, like rotten eggs or something.

ok guys i pulled the fusebox out from under the hood, no melted wires. thats good right? haha.. so i pulled the computer, it smells funny but i donno if its a burnt smell, theres like some crusty yellow junk on it??? Also there was some spliced wires goin to it, so im going to assume thats all bad? how do i get ahold of those guys you had mentioned? thanks guys

I stopped repairing ECUs in Sept 2010 when I took a job running the worldwide support group for Informatica's Messaging Group. I never found anyone who repaired the flash based ECUs found in the 98 and 99 cars, the rest of the DSM ECU work I refer to Tom and Dave at ECMTuning.

I have 2 spare 98 ecu's if interested, I'm going through electrical issues myself and tried swapping ecu's to find out if my ECU was fried, which it's not, so now I have 2 spare ECU's. PM me if interested.

hey guys so i got a new ecu. it got here and it had a different number on it so i googled it. it came up up as a 97 gst ecu, should that work with my car? because it still wont start :(

well right now it doesn't have anything aftermarket except what was done the the engine when i rebuilt it the radio isn't in right now because it didn't have power i have a random idea and it is a little out there but i had taken out the anti theft relay and fuse (btw background on car is my 99 get spyder has a rebuilt 95 engine with manual tranny swap and 95 engine harness plus 95 ecu she is kind of a frankenstien) anyways could honking the horn some how start a drain in the system? because the system was fine for the 2 weeks and when i went for the first long drive in it i honked the horn and later at the mall system was dead its a little far fetched i know but the eclipse wiring is so sensitive i wouldn't be surprised something stupid doing this.

I don't see how honking the horn would do it. Is your battery good? Alternator? What's the battery voltage with engine running both idle and reved? Then measure again with headlights, radio, and blower on both stopped, idle, reved.

Many aftermarket alarms are wired in wrong and pulling the fuse/relay doesn't change that - you have to disconnect every wire on it. But first remove every fuse to see if drain changes (measure drain) to locate circuit. If can't find it, do the things in my link in post #2. How much drain current are we talking here?

the answer is as simple as this: You have a short, or several shorts, look at every wire, wire loom, loose connections, everywhere. Fix them and you should be good to go.

The honking sounds like a alarm sys. I hate those things with a passion. Always more harm than good.
What you really need is to hook up your meter inline(neg or pos) and set it to read current. Then, while monitoring it start pulling fuses one by one until you see the current drop down to 0. Follow whatever you disconnected in the wiring and theres your problem.
Ive currently got some POS viper alarm sys on mine that i KNOW is going to reach up and bite me on the ass one day. Its so complex i cant just pull the wires, the dipshit before me did a hell of a job. Im going to have to get schematics to pull mine.
Factory alarm should be alot easier if that indeed is your problem.
