Scrape noise coming from the Front Passenger Wheel [ WMV video ]

Alright, Well the car has been sitting for part of the winter, and then on jacks for most of our cold spring. I finished new tires, and a brake job 4 days ago. When I finally lowered the car off the jacks and drove it; she started making a scrape type noise when driving. Me and my dad thought it could possibly be the universal joint on the driveshaft, but now upon further inspection it seems to be really coming from the front passenger wheel. It is like a scrapeing type sound.

It seems to 'scrape' everytime the air inlet on the tire passes the brake caliper. [ you can see it in the video, watch the small white dot on the tire; As the white dot passes the caliper you hear the scrape noise. ]

The car just got new front Brake rotors, and some re-used old front pads [ we bout the car 7 months ago, and the new front pads we bought didn't fit. We saw the old pads had hardly been used at all and threw them on. Think this might be it? The thing is, those old pads were on the car when we bought it, and they weren't making a scrapeing noise when we drove it. Also, the front driver wheel isn't making any scrape noise and that also has an old brake pad. ]


Normally driving [accel or decell ] it makes the scrape. It still makes the scrape noise when I push in the clutch and am coasting. When I brake the noise stops, as soon as I let off the brake it returns. [ which is why i thought it might have something to do with the breaks. ]

Could it be the Universal joint ?

The car is a 1995 TSi AWD
5 speed.
 
Check the dust shield on the back side of the rotor for warpage - if it's warped or bent, bend it back. :thumb:

I checked abit, But I figure if it is the brake dust shield, it would be constantly rubbing and not just in one spot. Maybe I'm wrong.

Hopefully going to get the wheel off tomorrow [ if the weather holds out ] and check everything in the area.
 
if it has been sitting for a while, nothing to worry about. A semi lazy caliper needs a work out.
Should go away in a week or two of full use. You also might have a spot of rust on your pads.

semi lazy? is it only semi lazy because it only squeaks at one point?

If i drive around, and do alot of repeated slow steady braking, should it go away after awhile within a day possibly?

I might have had a little bit of rust on the pad, but I think it would have gone away with the few hard stops done earlier.
 
So to ask the obvious: if you have that wheel up on a jack, tire/rim removed, transmission in neutral, and you rotate the wheel hub by hand, brake rotor included, do you get a noise? No? If you put the wheel back on and then rotate it by hand, do you get a noise? It seems like it shouldn't be too hard to replicate a rotational noise with your head right next to it so that you can audibly pinpoint the actual source. And yes, there are plenty of cases in which what you would expect to be perfectly round and symmetical ends up being not, so don't discount anything until you actually eliminate it systematically.

As pads wear down, yes the caliper SHOULD take up the excess movement, but sometimes it is slow to do it.
Since this one has not moved in a while, it may need to be driven a few days to get back into things and flowing as it should.

And no, just because you may have done some hard braking, does not mean you got all the rust knocked off.
