I was driving home today and did a couple 3-4th gear pulls on the highway. I got off of the exit and about 2 miles down the road my front passenger wheel started making a rubbing/squeeking noise. Sounds like metal on metal. It only makes the noise when i press the gas to speed up or even to just stay the same speed. I jacked the car up when i got home and tried pulling on the wheel to see if the it moves at all, and it doesn't. I spun it while it was in the air and it makes no noise and everything seems normal. But as soon as i start driving, it starts up again. If i put my car in neutral or if im slowing down in gear the noise goes away. I have no idea what it is. Almost sounds like the brake rotor shield is scraping on the rotor but i checked that and its not.

im pretty sure its trans or drivetrain related. considering you said the noise goes away if you put it in neutral.

Thats what i was thinking but my friend said it sounds like it comes from my right where my wheel assembly is.

My 98 gst was having the same problem. I took it to the dealership and they said I needed a new wheel bearing!

Now, all of a sudden the noise stopped, unless i am slightly accelerating with the steering wheel turned around 180 degrees or more.

I'll throw in a third vote for bad wheel bearing. My car has been doing the same thing recently, and when my tie rod end broke ( which was tons of fun at 7 am ) the shop I took it to said that my front right bearing had some play in it.

my vote would have to go for the wheel bearing too, seeing as how when you unload it (on a jack) you dont hear it

Jack the car up and grab the wheel at 12 and 6 try and shake it up and down. Movement, most likely wheel bearing.

Try loading and unloading the bearing. I know that when I'm driving down the highway and if i turn my wheel to the left a little. My bearing will start howling. Turn to the right a little bit, and the noise is gone. Try doing the same thing. Sometimes you actualy have to make turns, for it to load and unload. Post up your finding and we will help you. The only reason I dont feel its a bearing is you say it squeals.

A bad wheel bearing most people say sounds likes a howl.

Well, i found out what the noise was. I figured it was starting to go away and wasn't anything seriouse so i decided to take it to school today. Well about 1 mile away from my house (thank god) i was making a left turn onto the main road and all of a sudden i heard a clonk and it reved up like it was in neutral. I snapped an axle. I had to push it home in the rain because there is no way i was gunna try to get it towed, i like my front bumper attached to my car LOL. Now i need to get an axle
