Scared of getting a cold air intake...

I don't know, i'm just affraid of when it rains and there are a bunch of puddles of sucking up water and ####ing up my car. What do you guys think..does it happen a lot and what's the worst that can happen?
 
oh, that's cool...I didn't know they made those. Are they universal or will that one work only for the AEM intakes?
 
you shouldn't ever have a problem - unless you intend to drive through rivers and completely submerge the front end
 
Like the other guy said... unless your driving in a few feet of rain, you have nothing to worry about. You won't hydrolock the motor.
 
last summer when PA got hit with rain every day for a week and the roads had large puddles/flooded at some spots, i personally know of 3 cars with CAI that killed there engines. 2 of course actually drove through water that they shouldnt have, the 3rd just hit a water puddle and managed to get enough water in there.

tons of people run them and never have a problem. as for myself, I consider it too risky to have one so I don't
 
i have a cold air intake, i just installed it, im scared of hydrolock too, were getting alot of rain right now and my intake filter was soaked when i got home from driving, does the bypass valve work ? or can i stop worrying and let it go?
 
I wouldn't waste my money unless you can get it for 5 bucks you don't get the hp that they state you get in the magazines
 
?? Thats quite a bit of work to do every time it rains - I can't even get to my filter without jacking up the car.

Don't worry much about the rain, just avoid large puddles. The engine has to actually ingest quite a bit of water for it to hydro lock. It'll have to suck it up like a straw.

Avoid large puddles and you'll be alright.
 
if you bought it, like everyone said be careful, otherwise i'd rather go with a shortram, minimum performance difference between the two,
 
i used to own a 97 eclipse GS N/T and i had a full AEM dry filter cold air intake and i never had a problem and i drove it in the rain all the time and this was not the short route it was the full route and it stuck right out into a hole that was on my bodykit and it got wet and i never had problems so i would say don't worry about it.
 
I have a CAI. It cosists of 2 pipes. It is not a big deal to take off the lower pipe, when is rainy and cold and put it back on, whenhot adn dry. I drove couple of times in the rain and filter was soaked, even though I drove very carefully and slow. The AEM bypass would work only on NA car, not on turbocars. I wouldn't drive it in the rain, if it was me. On the other hand it works extremely well lowering AIT's. you could buy a heat shield and put it on the bottom of your filter??

You would still get water coming through the sides. If I were you , I would just get the short ram. That way you don't have to worry about it, and being you have a N/T, I doubt you will see hardly any difference between a short ram, and a cold air intake anyways.
 
When I had my 98 n/t I had an AEM v2 CAI on it and drove it all over the place and in all sorts of rain without any problems. The only time I got scared is when it flooded in NC after a hurricane and I drove through a huge puddle that completely submerged my filter for bout 5 seconds, I wasn't paying attention. My motor died instantly and I coasted to the side of the road. It took about 3 minutes to get it to start again with me thinkin I had hydrolocked it the whole time. Luckily it didn't but I never went through any big puddles again.
