hey guys i was looking to tune with a safc but as i was looking to buy one there was a safc and an safc 2 and a neo? does anybody know what the difference in these 3 are?
thanks in advance..

They are all outdated technology and you are better off with ECMlink V3 lite or ceddymod.

Don't waste your time and money with an AFC.

Exactly get a eprom or non and have it converted, get lite and get to tuning, then upgrade as yoiu need later, also if you dont have a wideband get that, or tuning is useless if you cant watch air fuel ratios.

To answer the question that you asked i prefer the safcII. very user friendly. i thought the neo was a pile for the money that was spent. but others will of course disagree. if you have a chip with a safc you could use bigger injectors. otherwise your limit would be around 680cc injectors or less, to be safe. as pointed out it'll be more expensive , then again money spent once is better than money spent twice. just a thought.

If you don't have the option to get DSMlink then SAFC or SAFC 2 is the way to go. I personally have an SAFC in my Talon and it so far works very well, you can pick a used one up for about $125-$150. Check ebay or your local craigslist, keep in mind that you can only correct up to about 720 injectors, so if you are planning on going bigger than that in the near future, or already have bigger injectors than 720s, I suggest just saving up for DSMlink.

yea i know everyone would tell me to get dsmlink but for what im going with right now i think it would be a little overkill..a few people told me to get the safc and evoscan but im not real fimiliar with either one. since im getting the e316g for xmas i want to put bigger injectors and wally 190 in it but i wasnt looking to spend a lot of money on dsm link when a safc would suffice. i was looking to put 650's or somewhere in that range in my car. and of course the wideband..

Im getting link and bigger injectors so the money spent on a safc if i were going that way, could be spent on v lite the cheaper version. Then i wont have to look for a tuning device, overkill again its up to youl.

DSMLink is never overkill

It'll simply make your car run tons better.
I remember a thread on the ECMLink forums where a bone stock 1g with DSMLink gained around 35whp from just a retune.

It's NEVER overkill.

If you truly don't want to get DSMLink, get your ECU socketed and buy a keydiver stage 3chip, no self tuning and imo they're better than SAFC's.

I'd like to do a simple comparison between an safc and ecmlink.

Safc

Ecmlink

My point here is what? Both can make phone calls, but one is just so much better at everything else than the other. If you factor in the price of an afc and a logging setup your pretty dam close to the price of ecmlink. I don't know why anyone in their right might would choose to save those few bucks and go with an outdated technology like the motorola cel phone i posted. Hope this helps

I wouldnt get a keydiver...jeff(i believe thats his name?) is going out of business last time i checked his website.

in response to the OP. I've used both safc/evoscan and currently running link v3 full in my 90. Evoscan was nice, but it only allows you to log. link is a all in one package and its super user friendly. As well as the help you can find at their forums is outstanding. I personally will never go back to an safc or any other tuning program/device. I would save up and get link lite. then later on if you decide to go big, you can always upgrade your lite to the full version

I'm running a Jeff O. Chip, and an SAFCII with 720cc injectors.
I had the SAFCII left over from my turbo civic, so it was the way to go. (That and external wastegate, boost controller, and wideband)

To do it all over again though, ecmlink lite is the most cost effective way to go. It's stupid - for the same amount of money, while ecmlink has almost limitless possibilities - the SAFC is limited due to the fact that it can only fine tune so much, and those running larger injectors need eproms reburnt accordingly.

Yep it helps, but its not designed to be a full tuning device which is why i never got it years ago after i turbocharged my dsm. Long term goals with this car and others to follow, so after researching it, ive made the decision to get it.

Can you get any ecu socketed? I was told and read you have to have a 95 eprom ecu. I hvae a plastic 95 ecu can that be socketed?

You're a 99. Why hasn't anyone suggested ceddy mods? It will cost less than an SAFC and you'll have very similiar options to ecmlink. I bought my tactrix cable for $30 shipped, and then another $25 for evoscan and I was good to go other than a wideband.

Hey I mentioned ceddymods in the first reply. It is a great option for the 98-99 ecu.

I would look into DSMlink if i were you. Especially if you plan on ever doing a 6bolt swap or ever want to do some quick diagnosing.

Just saw that. Sorry! :thumb: I think he needed a better description on what it was as well.

Link, if you mess it up redo what you did novice or not its easy to use, I was sold years ago, spent most of my time getting the car intact, now its still not but ill be set when i get the awd, tuning mods, just about everything i need. All my friends use it, i love the features even with lite then i can upgrade as time goes on but this thing will be back on the road this year, with upgrades so im excited to see what all these years have come to.

I have never seen a plastic 95 ECU if it's plastic then it is most likely a 98-99 ECU.

Here is a link to the page about ECU's and their numbers.
epromid [ECMTuning - wiki]

A non eprom 95-97 can be socketed for $185
ECMTuning, Inc.

When I first started building the car thats the first thing I had to get. The shop I got it from said it was a 95. When I did the 6bolt the injector repin to the ecu was pinned as 95 and it works. IDK if it is or not. Im gonna look into it to get socketed.

thats funny, I went to a tunning place the other day and asked if I could stand to gain any horsepower from tuning my car with its current mods. They said it was useless unless I got a larger turbo, then they told me to go buy a s-afc. Should I keep adding mods to my engine (cams, exhaust manifold, etc.) and THEN invest in dsm-link? also can these cars gain ANY horsepower from tuning if you have no mods?
