rotten egg smell, have searched

ok i have searched this but nothing sounds like my problem close but no cigar, when i left work for lunch like and hour ago in the parking garage i heard this metal virating sound, i know my exhaust is loose so i didnt think any thing of it, get almost to my house and im at a stop light and i suddenly smell rotten eggs, also my idle has been a little speratic lately, i smelled it then the light turned green and i didnt smell it the rest of the way home, got home and stood outside my car while the timer counted down and still couldnt smell it, same thing happened a day ago i only will smell it like once or twice during drives, i need to know if its the cat or the ecu, because if its the ecu i need to find one today before i haft to take my son to daycare in the morning...please help

also these were under normal driving conditions not wot or quick accelerations, just normal driving shifting at 3000

Take your ecu out and open it up. Fried electrical components will produce an ugly smell.

Most likely the ECU. Take it out and open it up. Or you might just be able to stick your nose down there to tell.

ok its below the cd player right? and is it three bolts that hold it in or just 2, also does 60 sound reseanable for an ecu? got a guy locally who told me a min ago that it might be my caps and he would sell me one for 60

Check and see how the water level in your battery is. I bet its low.

battery is brand new literally only 1 month old so is the alternator

it is your catalytic converter. you have exact symptons of it. if you want to know for yourself, take ## hand and beat on it and you shouldnt hear anything, if you hear a rattle sound, ## cat is backed up and needs to be replaced

Yes ecu is behind the stereo. Or atleast that is where it is on my 2g.

ok my plan of action when i get off work is to ang on my cat in the parking garage, smell the ecu, drive home smell ecu again, and order wichever needs replaced, i will update first thing in the morning thanks guys

Manual transmission? A burning clutch smells bad almost like rotten eggs, but honestly the catalytic convertor was the first thing that came to mind.

Cat converters always smell like that when they plug up if you have on its very possible

honestly it could be any of these it still has the cat but the exhaust is broke next to the fuel tank, clutch feels fine but i just bought the car the beginning of june so who knows, and i have never checked the ecu but i have been meaning to check it to see if its an eprom, i guess this gives me an excuse to turn a wrench though

update: so i didnt get a chance to pull the ecu (girlfriends bday) but i have not smelled the burning egg smell again, but exhaust still sounds weird to me, has a buzzing/hissing sound and it just smells weird, almost smells like an old carb truck, so my plan of action is to go ahead with a cat deleat, change the plugs and wires and cross my fingers.


also i smelled the ecu before and after driving and didnt smell anything both times

Also a manual clutch plate, (metal on metal) can be the worst smell ever like dead fish, smelly feet, rotten eggs and it will smell up your car, tell you what, rev your car to 3k and drop the clutch on the way home at somepoint, if its the clutch, it will smell right after that!

Well, according to my emission testing sheet that I keep around, you live in a state that does not do emission testing. I'd hack the sucker off and call it a day.

As soon as I installed my new High flow cat and RRE downpipe my exhaust smelled the same way. Dosent do it all the time usually can smell it after getting on it a little bit..just wrote it off as a "new cat smell"?? was I wrong to do this?

thats right my state has no emissions laws so there will not be anything but pipe going back in, the only problem with this is the car gets very loud, my prelude was straight open pipe from header straight back to blow through megan muffler and good god, my buddies could here me coming from two blocks away when i wasnt into it, but thanks for your help guys i will replace the cat and post what happens after that.

You could always just take it off and hollow it out...
