Rod Knock? crankwalk?

im thinking about buying a car off of someone whos car is in good condition but is expericing on and off rod knock??? anyone know what that is and is the motor on its way to crankwalking???

Could be Balance Shaft knock too...

It's probably not crankwalk but if it is rod knock, it has a spun rod bearing and the bottom end will have to be rebuilt. The crank will probably be scored and have to be machined or replaced. I'm not sure about the "on and off" part as when I got rod knock it was all the time and not "on and off". Either way you should investigate further and make sure that you bargain in the cost of repairs if you plan to buy.

I am not the guy who is selling the car, but I have seen the ad around here in chicago as well,,anyway...Emmanuel why don't you ask if its worht $2500...and the guy told me that the rod knock is always....its not on and off....and aldo yes i was told the same thing...swap the short block with a 6-bolt...all in all......you get yourself a 5-spd TURBO for a damn good price....

As they are actually by their very design TOTALLY UNBALANCED shafts - when the bearings go - they knock as they rock around in there.

Sweet, thats the problem with my car now...my mechanic said I need a new engine cause my balance shaft broke and was trying to figure out how the shaft would make all that noise.

uhhuh ok see the thing is i rather buy the car with a good motor in it than rather having to buy thing then spend the money in buying a new motor with all the parts.......other words

rod knock sounds more like " cling! cling! " and its a total death cry it would only do it for a day then its over. if its more of a " knock " its most likley the balance shafts. mine have been knocking for a year and im finaly going to eliminate them this monday

um, maybe u should find out where the sound is coming from b/c for sure if it is rod knock, it'd b pretty loud and its not on and off.....to me, how u explained it, it could b the lifters, which r on and off. btw, the lifters make a knocking sound near the intake manifold and the top of the valve cover area. oh yea, if it was rod knocking, would there b some bits of metal on the oil dipstick when u pull it out?
