The other day I did plugs and wires on my 91 Laser and I accidently tightened the bolts holding the plastic spark plug cover on instead of loosening. I know I'm an idiot... I heard a snap but figured it was just the bolts breaking loose from sitting for 4 years. When I got the cover off all of the holes were broken out and there were metal chunks on top of the rocker cover under the spark plug cover. So now I can't bolt the spark plug cover back on.

I'm making a run to the junkyard in a little bit to get a new center taillight so I'm going to try to pick one up if I can find one. But I was just wondering if the rocker cover off of a turbo 1g or 2g would work on a non turbo?

I looked it up in CAPS, it's giving me 3 different numbers.
MD125932 - NT 1g (like mine)
MD125933 - Turbo 1g
MD316252 - Turbo 2g

So I guess they're a little bit different, but would they still work? I've yet to find a non turbo 1g in a junkyard.

Yeah I nkow the Sonata used to use the 4G63 but there aren't any of those years in any yards around here.

So even a 2g would work? I'd be more likely to find one of those.

The hyundai tiburon and elantra also had a 4G63 in them. I know for sure the 98-99 elantra was a 4g63 and same for the tiburon.

d

yeah, i say unless it really bugs you just keep it off:)

plus since you just got new wires, why not show em off?
haha

Well I went and got one off a 95 Sonata today. Didn't realize it was so much work to do... I wasn't expecting to have to pull the cam gears. Got it for $15 though.

You guys saying to just leave it off... maybe you're thinking of another part? I'm talking about the piece on the top taht says DOHC 2000. You can't just leave that off...

You are talking about the valve cover. Your first post was confusing because you said it was the "...spark plug cover...", which is the piece that covers the area where the spark plugs are located.

Why would you have to pull the cam gears to get a VC off?

+1. You do not have to do anything with the cam gears to take off a VC. OMG

Yeah I always called it a valve cover... then I looked it up in CAPS and it said rocker cover so I was confused. Figured maybe I'd been calling it the wrong thing. LOL

How do you guys do it wihtout pulling the cam gears then? You can't slide it up high enough to get it over the studs, the part where it curves on the drivers side hits on the gears and there's still like half an inch of studs that you have to get it over.

LOL That's messed up.

Get you a set of these. They look much nicer than stock, and there's less chance of over torquing them.

While your at it, get some for the oil pan for the next time you have to remove it. No more worrying about those silly two shorter bolts in the front. ;)

Yeah I'll have to check mine out and see how it goes on. Seems weird that the Hyundai would have studs and the DSMs would have bolts, its the same motor?

I've only seen one Hyundai at a junkyard while I was scrounging for parts, and the VC on it had bolts (the only reason it still had a VC is because it was cracked pretty bad, so nobody had swiped it). I don't know which it came with from the factory...I always just assumed it would be bolts.

I can't think of a single reason why anyone would EVER want or need studs on a 4g63 valve cover. It's not like it's hard to get positioned correctly or needs a lot of torque. LOL

So you're not even sure if the car has studs, but are just assuming because another car you have does?

Most likely it will have bolts.

Yeah. Well the other car isn't mine, I found it at a junkyard. It was the only 4G63 I found.

I would've checked mine out before I posted this but like I said the car is at the shop to get the exhaust done right now. I'm gonna take a ride over there in a little bit and see if they've made any progress so I'll check it out then.

Just spend the $12 and get the allen head bolts I linked to and call it done. You can remove the VC and put it back on in 2 minutes without as much chance of cracking it...and it will look nice too ;)

They are standard m6 x 1.0 bolts.

Whatever you go with, be careful of the two bolts that hold the cam gear cover on. If you use bolts that are too long, they will punch through the boss on the underside of the VC, and oil can start leaking out of that hole.

I've seen 3 VC's where that has happened. People use bolts that are too long and punch a hole through the VC, and then decide to remove the cam gear cover because they think it "looks cool"....then they wonder why they have oil all over the top of their VC and under the hood.
