Paying $200+ EACH for replacement Stoptech rotors is painful. The cost of a replacement outer disk should be in the $120 range (at least it was for the Porterfields and two-piece Coleman rotors I used on my 3000GT).

So, does anyone know of a lower-cost source for replacement Stoptech rotors?

I talked to the folks at FrozenRotors, and they said they could make 'em up if I shipped them one of my old cracked rotors, but he didn't say how much. I suspect the folks at Coleman could probably make them too.

Anybody been through this before? I can't believe Stoptechs cost so much and racers put up with it. After all, they ain't THAT good. I've cracked three of them so far.

Are you only able to run the StopTech rotors? Would another larger rotor still fit the braking system?

Now *THAT* is a very good question. The DSM bolt circle is identical to a 3000GT, and I had very good luck with two-piece Coleman rotors. I was running Porsche Big Red calipers and 13.5 in. Coleman rotors, and the system worked very well. That 4000 lb monster ate up race pads, but the system stopped that big car like hitting a brick wall.

I wish I had a set of the Colemans laying around, but they went with the 3000GT when I sold it. I still have some old 2nd gen 3000GT rotors. Maybe I'll see if they will fit into the Stoptech caliper. If so, I'll have a bunch of lower-cost options, ranging from stockers to Porterfields to Colemans.

As soon as I find an alternative, Stoptech will lower the price to be more competitive, but that's Murphy's Law. Besides, it will be good for DSM racers, and that's what this forum is all about.

Thanks for the idea.

What pads are you running on the Stoptechs?

Cobalt Friction Spec B, because the car came with a spare set of those pads. Between what was in the calipers and the spare set, I got through the summer. Seemed to work OK. My only problems with the Stoptechs are (a) they crack easily and (b) replacement rotors cost a fortune -- 2X what they should cost.

I have not yet ordered new pads for next season.

I ran Carbotech Panther Plus on the 3000GT and liked them a lot, and am inclined to get a set for the Eclipse, but I am open to suggestions. What do you recommend?

For years I've been using the Porterfield R4-E's. They're pretty aggresive but don't eat up the rotors like the Hawk Blues that I ran for the second half of last season. The Hawks are extremely aggressive and you difinetly have to budget extra rotors for the season. (I had no rotor cracking problems with the Hawks- just extreme wear) Keep in mind that as a NASA member you get a 20% discount through Porterfield who also sell Hawks and a couple of other pad companies.

Another benefit of the R4-E's is that they're very streetable, including subzero temperatures. Not finicky about needing to be warm to work like a lot of other pads.
