I have never owned a 1g with ABS, but I've heard that it is crap.

Can someone explain in more detail WHY it is crap? I am planning to build a DSM road race car, and am deciding whether or not I want to find one with ABS.

It seems like ABS is better than no ABS, especially in the wet, which is when this car should shine. What years did 1g's come with ABS?

Thanks for your help.

I never like abs. You can always delete the abs if you don't like it. My 07 civic will hit a bump while I'm braking and the abs will trigger. I hate it. My 99 spyder had no ABS and my 92 talon has no ABS and I like it that way.

I've been doing a fair amount of research into ABS and road racing as well, and came across this, which to me is much more informative then just the "it feels better to me" argument.

Things I have to take into consideration is I am running Evo brakes with the JDM Galant knuckles, and I plan in the future to upgrade to a big brake upgrade the Evo guys would take, which would take me vastly further into the braking spectrum then the stock DSM ABS was programmed for, and I am guessing the %s here as described in this post would be no where near stock, rendering the ABS useless.

I think the only point of ABS for me would be to prevent flat spotting tires, otherwise it won't be helping me to stop faster.

I am open to discussion though!

ABS and Big Brake Kits

Some input from another thread:

Weight in very undesirable location, adds more complication. I eliminated the ABS and factory prop valve in favour of an adjustable proportioning valve setup. ABS on our cars doesn't redistribute braking force based on available grip at each tire, it simply releases braking force on wheels that lock. If you have done any modifications to the suspension and/or tire setup of your car, you alter what is considered to be the ideal brake force split F/R. Since this split is a set value from the factory which cannot be changed (other than with an adjustable prop valve), the ABS will kick in earlier than it normally would, since one end of the car will lock earlier than the other (most often the front). When ABS kicks in like this you lose significant braking power. In addition, if you ever lift a tire under braking, say on a rough braking zone (very common on any car with a coil-over suspension since you lose a significant amount of droop travel and usually have overly stiff rebound damping), you will lose almost all braking force as the ABS system tries to free the tire which it thinks is in a skid (when in reality it is just airborne).

On a heavily modified DSM, a properly proportioned braking system without ABS will easily outbrake an ABS car with the stock proportioning valve, if you have any ability to threshold brake.

With this said, I will always recommend ABS on any car that is driven on the street, especially in any type of weather.

AND finally, another good bit of info I took into consideration:

I've run with and without ABS (pulled fuse) on track and definitely prefer ABS. Lap time wise no significant difference, but a 130mph lockup will flat spot tire$ pretty quick.

Anyone have 1g ABS components I could use for testing. I would provide DAQ results to this forum, of course.

I threw mine in the trash years ago, the 1G system is horrible. Add in better brake components and I don't think there's any way the 1G ABS system could keep up. They don't call it "Amateur's Braking System" for nothing. :D

So you have non-ABS and you want to install ABS for testing? That'd be a PITA considering the wiring harness.

I just trashed mine weeks ago. Twas in a 1992. Still have the computer in a closet somewhere though. Deleted it last fall prior to a Time Trial. No lockups. Good riddance to that boat anchor and clutter.
