I haven't gotten a chance to update my info so here is the car in discussion:
98 GSX 5-speed
142,xxx miles
Stock minus full exhaust from turbo back (no cat)
Supposedly new clutch (bought car and owner claimed the clutch was new).
I bought the car 2 weeks ago and it has drove perfectly until yesterday morning. I started the car, put it in reverse, and attempted to back up and the car revved like it was still in neutral. I was able to recreate the problem again today and I noticed that when I have it in reverse and it isn't going to work, I hear a whirling/metallic noise when the clutch is not fully engaged.. The noise goes away when I press in the clutch, but comes back when I start to release. I can release the clutch all the way when this happens and the car will not stall. The problem is intermittent and doesn't happen every time.. To fix, I just shift out of reverse and back into it and try to release the clutch again.. if I hear the whirling noise as I release, I try again.
Some other problems that I know of.. When I start the car, I hear a crackling noise for a split second right after the car has started. I did some research and I think this issue is the flywheel being worn down.. Could the issue be related?
Anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?
UPDATE: Car doesn't grind at all when trying to shift, all gears are fairly smooth, and I can get the selector into reverse with no problems. Hot and cold weather seem to have no effect because it happened when I was backing out of my driveway this morning after a cold night, and also happened when I got to work and had to reverse (after the car was warmed up).
UPDATE2: Also, no popping in and out of gears, and no issues at all getting it into gears, both when the car is on or off. When I recreated the problem, reverse never engaged. I waited about 1 minute after letting it sit in reverse with the whirling sound and the clutch out all the way to see if it would eventually work.. It just sat there until I shifted out and back into reverse and it worked the second time.
UPDATE3: No issues today at all.. (Friday December 16, 2011)
UPDATE4: I'm finding stuff on other forums claiming that this is common on certain cars (both used and new).. Does anyone else on the forum ever get this problem?
