[RESOLVED] won't start help....

so yesterday i took off the valve cover to repaint it, installed a tubular manifold, and painted my fuel rail. was running just fine before this. now when everything is back together is won't start. i did have a pyrometer installed on the stock mani but i didn't put that back on. i know that i have fuel because some gas leaked out when i took off one of the ends to check that. it seems like i nothing else is going on when i turn the key. i only here my fuel pump and that's just about it. everything is connected like before except for that pyrometer. help?????

Check your injectors for 12 volts key on engine off. If you have that, using a test light, hook it to the positive side of your battery. Crank engine over and observe the light. Steady on or off is bad. Winking is good. You can also go to the parts house and get a cheap mechanic's stethescope and listen to see if the injectors are clicking when you crank the engine. Do these tests and post the results.

You said you painted the valve cover. Did you forget to plug the coils back in? Its a 3 wire connector shaped like a triangle. Also if you painted anything make sure you have a good ground. The coils have to be grounded and so does the Power Transistor pack. If either one isnt grounded or if you left one unplugged this would allow for no spark but still injector pulse.

The 2gb 7 bolts have a different sensor on the VC I know it looks similar to the 6bolt CAS if it funcitons similar then that could be an issue as well. I know my 2ga just has a connector thats bolted in the area but no sensor. My buddys 98 has some sort of sensor similar to the CAS if anybody could explain how that functions im sure it has to supply a signal to the coils/injectors as well

the only thing i painted was the vc so what would need to be grounded to it? also i read that it might be a mpi relay because i forgot to disconnect the battery before taking everything off. where is this, how do i know if its bad?

well According to Alldata the starter relay is the MPI relay they are the same thing. The only thing that I can think of would be the factory anti theft if youve got it. If you unhooked any sensors maybe it disabled the system? What exactly did you unhook to paint the VC. I know the sensor I was referring to (passenger rear of VC) might have to come off but there should be anything else to take off if you just removed the VC.

Did you say you removed some other sensor as well and thats the only thing changed when you put it back together?

Snap some good pics of the coil area and the VC and sensor on the passenger side where youd find the CAS on a 6bolt

everything i removed: big sensor at the very top center between intake and fuel rail, two sensors near the left side of rail, complete fuel rail assembly, mass air flow sensor, old exhaust mani, down pipe, o2 sensor (just from the connector thing above the tranny), some wire on the very bottom left of my valve cover(held on by nut in top pic), sensor plug right next to coil. everything is plugged back in the way i found it now though.

If you removed the sensor on the side of the valve cover back passenger side. Did you make sure you put it back on correctly? As stated before I havent messed with the 97-99s much but the 6bolts have a similar CAS and it can be turned 180* and then the car wont start. If it only goes one way then try checking the power transitor unit. Its located between the intake manifold and the fuel rail near runner #3 it has a plug shaped like the MAF if its unplugged or not plugged in correctly this could be the issue.

One more thing. The coil pack connector and one of the a/c connectors on the driver side near the timing cover interchange. Is there any way you could have swapped the plugs? Im not sure it will reach but just an idea. How are you getting pulse on the injectors and fuel if it wont even turn over?

EDIT okay as in it wont crank at all? I didnt read that entirely... Okay if it wont crank then look for a small wire on top of the tranny its black with a yellow stripe. This is the ding wire for the starter. 2gs are bad about these coming unplugged on the starter and or the quick connector. It might be easier to trace it from the starter back to where it plugs in ontop of the tranny.

i don't see any black/yellow wire besides the giant thick one from the battery. also my 'triangle' connector are in the right place. the a/c one won't even reach that far.

Let me stress its a bi*** to find. There have been several posts on this. This might not be your problem but its always a good guess for your symptoms. Especially if you unplugged some connectors near the tranny. Its the same color as the larger one but it should be a single wire very small and I believe its in a black loom all by itself. I cant remember as I removed the loom from mine and cut out the connector due to it being corroded. It should run atop the tranny under the intake and to the clip on the starter.

As for the a/c plug I took another look at the pic after I wrote that and realized its correct.

I was confused at first because you said you had fuel and no spark. Im assuming now when you turn on the key you hear the pump but it wont crank at all

heres a not so good pic. the IC pipe is on the bottom and the VC on the top. This is looking directly down on the two. The wire has the large yellow buttsplicer thingy on it

okay. If its an auto check to see that the neutral safety or transmission range sensor is plugged in. On the autos its the sensor near the shifter linkage ontop the tranny.

You did say you unplugged some sensors atop the tranny. Double check that area. Have you tried unplugging the battery for a few minutes and then seeing if it will start up?

If that doesnt work follow that wire back to the starter and see if you have 12v+ while cranking. Use a test light and have a buddy help. If you do have 12v+ something is wrong with the connection at the starter. If you dont it could be a bad starter relay or the neutral/clutch switch depending on auto or 5 spd. Its a simple ignition path. I am still betting something isnt plugged in correctly or you forgot to plug something back in

FIXED!!!!!! all i did was wiggle this connector and it started right up!!!!

thats cars for you. Mess with something unrelated to what you just touched and its fixed. Im assuming that has something to do with the neutral/clutch switch or main ignition connector its hard to tell and mines and older 95. Change your thread to RESLOVED!!!
