[RESOLVED] what is this? (Charcoal canister)

i currently have a 98 gsx. I was doing my intercooler piping and there is this black box located in the front lower driverside with all these hoses and lines connected to it...
Can anybody tell me what this black box does and can i remove it so i have more room for my intercooler piping?

What is that cylinder/tube thing under the battery tray in 2g's?.. maybe all years
And do I need it? It had a line running into it but it was unhooked from what I think was my intake manifold. I have pictures if needed.

It's the charcoal canister for emissions. The vacuum line should go to one of the side ports on the intake tube, before the turbo. You don't NEED it unless you have emissions testing where you live. There are several threads on it already. Do a quick search for "charcoal canister" and I'm sure you'll find all the information on it.
