Hi guys,

I just signed up today and tried using the search engine. A few pulley names popped up; unfortunately, there were no pictures. The Chilton manual that I have has a picture of that pulley but no name designated for it. The pulley is making a constant, irritating squeeky sound at idle and squeeks harsh occassionally during acceleration. Here is the pic:

It's the top visible pulley.
My mechanic did a check and told me it is the A/C adjusting pulley. I can't find that name in the search engine. Maybe DSMers have a different name for it? By the way I was a former DSMer, but that's a long story best told for another time. Anyway, I hope one of you genius can help me out here. It's probably due to the bearing wearing out according to my mechanic. He said remove the belt and give the factory number of the bearing to the Mitsubishi dealer so that it can order me a new one. That's great, but I want to make sure of its name first. I hope this post will help out other "newbies."

Oh yeah, my car is a 1996 Mitsubishi GSX with a manual tranny.

Thanks:)

Thanks! On the website provided, I don't see any part with the word "bearing." What's another name for bearing, do you know?

So to remove this pulley, I just loosen the tension bolts and remove the a/c belt? Mechanic said I can just lightly tap the pulley loose with a hammer. There is such a narrow space between the timing belt cover and the car body I wonder how that is acchieved.
Sorry, i'm a dunce when it comes to pulley and belts. :coy:

Also, the squeeking, in reality, gets quit louder the longer the car sits idle. The sound wasn't that bad before until I began adjusting the tension bolts (this piece sits above the a/c pulley--the rightmost pulley, in case you're wondering) as suggested by mechanic. Came back to the shop and it turned out I had overloosened the tension bolts and that in turn relaxed the a/c belt. So his bud tightened it. Although the squeeking is still present.

Mitsubishi calls it the A/C tension pulley. (Bearings are always inside pulleys.)
You'll have to remove the A/C belt and then remove the tension pulley bracket in order to replace the tension pulley. Loosen the adjusting bolt and then remove the 2 bracket bolts (one is below the other).

Appreciate your directions, simple and to the point. Ok, here's what I know so far...

The pulley is called the a/c tension pulley

To remove said pulley, I first need to loosen the adjusting bolt (check) and remove the a/c belt. I then remove the tension pulley bracket by removing the upper and lower bracket bolts (check). Sound right so far?

Now that the a/c tension belt and the tension pulley bracket are removed (if I get this far!), we are left with the pulley. How do you remove the pulley? From the picture we see that the distance from the pulley to the car body is maybe an inch or so. I just can't imagine how you can lightly tap it loose with a hammer. If I can just get the gear id number and send it to autozone that would be great, otherwise, i have to get the whole pulley from the local mitsu dealer which means big $$$ and I am not that rich LOL.

p.s. 95burgundyesi, I guess I may need to get an a/c tension pulley from you first before I try the dealer (in case the pulley has to be replaced and not the bearing).

p.p.s. I want to know if the gearing is present in 95burgundyesi's link.

Well since you're getting technical, you first need to loosen those upper and lower bracket bolts 1-2 turns so bracket can swivel. Then loosen the adjusting bolt far enough (so bracket can swivel to relieve all belt tension) to get the belt off the tension pulley. Then remove the upper and lower bracket bolts and pull bracket out of car.

Now that the a/c tension belt and the tension pulley bracket are removed (if I get this far!), we are left with the pulley. How do you remove the pulley? The pulley is bolted onto the bracket and you just removed it so it no longer is in the car! Undo the pulley bolt nut and it will slip out of the bracket. Then lightly tap, if you have to, the bolt out of the pulley. It's not worth the price to get it from dealer. Most auto stores should have it, just ask for the A/C tension pulley. Or from one of the many online stores. If not get a used one from 95burgundyesi, dsm classifieds, or a junk yard. The bearing and pulley come as one unit not separately (bearing is part of the pulley). There is no gearing. Of course if your A/C doesn't work (typical and too much $ to fix) or you don't need it, all you have to do is cut the A/C belt and you're done. ROFL

If you need anything I will give you the bracket, pulley, and bearing all together so you will have everything. You don't need a/c if your windows roll down, my passanger window is slower than the drivers LOL, just roll em down and open the sun roof. You did get a factory sun roof right? I think it makes it look sexy.

Ok so the pulley is connected to the bracket that I will remove! LOL
I thought it was a separate unit my bad.
Well it's weekday and I won't get home until around 5:30 pm. That leaves me with roughly about 2 hours of day time to work with. It probably won't last that long to get the pulley out huh? And I wonder what my mechanic was trying to say when he said to just remove the bearing and get the id number. Yeah, it makes sense to get parts from the enthusiasts then giving away your hard earned dough to those greedy dealers. I like to support the local mechanics and DIY at any chance. Oh, and I live in HOT, MUGGY South Texas. You can't survive here for long without having the a/c in the car!! Unless the car is a dedicated all time drag racer, the a/c has to stay. ;)

I would just give you the bracket, pulley, and everything affiliated with that goes with it. Lol what was he tryin to charge you, 100 bucks and your left leg? LOL

Northern Illinois gets humid in the summer and the air is all heavy and nasty but every DSM I have owned never has working a/c so it's no big deal for me because I am used to it. Just let me know in a pm if you need it.

Who needs the a/c when it's 75F outside! LOL
Are you giving that away for free? :sneaky:
Man, I was driving yesterday and that pulley didn't squeek. It probably overheard us and is trying to behave hahah. Well I learn quite a bit about this pulley. If it starts acting up again, i'm gonna try to remove it and let you in on the scoop. Thanks for the help you guys are awesome.
