i put a new starter on my 98 Talon Tsi AWD 5sped and it turn the motor over just fine for about 4 seconds then all it would do is make a horrible grinding noise. The car isnt getting any spark so it wouldnt start but i wanna get this starter issue straightened out first. Could it be my flywheel that is bad or could the part store gave me the wrong starter like for an automatic or somthing? How do i check my flywheel? As for the rest of it, the car isnt getting spark and the fuel pump isnt kicking on. I put a brand new fuel pump in and tried 2 different ECU's and still nothing?

I changed a starter on my gfs 97 toyota PU and it had the same issues even after changing the starter, came to find out one half of each tooth had a nice groove in it from grinding all thet ime. May need a new flywheel.

i know there is a differance in the 4wheel drive and the front wheel drive flywheels. i dont know for sure if there is a differance in starters tho. there might be a differance and you got the wrong one. might wanna look into that

How do i check my flywheel?

When I checked mine all I did was jack up the car and remove I think its 2 or 3 bold from the cover at the bottom of the motor where it meets the trans. You can see the teeth. You will have to have someone rotate the motor while you are looking to see all of the teeth

thanks guys. i got my car to my buddys shop last night and checked the flywheel. the flywheel is shot and the starter is the right one and is good. so im goin to order a new flywheel. thanks for all your help
