i just bought a 1990 Talon Tsi Awd. (approximately 1 month ago). not sure when last oil service done, oil is clean, he stated was recently done. car is from washington and i live in cleveland. have the paperwork for cylinder head total rebuild, timming/balance belts done about 30,000 miles ago (also 5-6 years). valve cover has slight crack. i did alot ALOT of research but i am still stumped. after about 15-20 minutes of idleing or a good drive it will smoke a little. blue smoke. oil burning. i pulled the downpipe, and there is just carbon no oil. i pulled the boost pipe off of turbo and there is just a light film of oil. pulled plugs and they are clean grey the way they should be. 14b turbo. car is totally stock. i haven't really driven car, at shop to install some parts, axles, ball joints etc. cylinders all test at 140psi. i changed pcv valve due to it being bad, tried cleaning and it was still bad, bought new mitsu valve and installed. haven't tested since that. was going to put in some 10w40 mobil 1. the exhaust housing on turbo has a crack from where it meets manifold to where it will wrap around center section. leaks some oil from bottom also. no shaft play at all and still boosts 7psi. does not smoke until it idles for a while (15-20minutes) and you give it a quick rev. brand new to these vehicles HELP!

It could be the turbo seals, valve seals or piston rings, they guy says its rebuilt...how many miles ago? Is it past break-in? B/C 140 psi seems low for a newly ringed motor. I rebuilt my engine and honed with new rings and got about 164psi

just the head was rebuilt. would pulling the exhaust manifold and checking for oil be a tell tail sign for valve stem seals?

yes it is past break in, about 30,000 miles, bottom end not done just the head, balance belts, timming belt. maybe i think i will wet compression test it and see if i get better results, but all cylinders are same so far.

just the head was rebuilt
Big no-no there then. He did the top end and not the bottom end. Tired oil rings is the norm here. With that top end done, it's pulling oil past them tired rings.

If you do a head on a high mileage motor, you best do rings and bearings as well- get everything in balance.

until it idles for a while (15-20minutes) and you give it a quick rev
.. dead giveaway that valve seals are gone...

Good luck-DSM

Its tough to find symptoms of valve seal failure, a lot of times you will get a puff of smoke when you first start it up. Also you can pull your exhaust mani and check if oil is dripping down the valve. That doesnt rule out the intake valves though. Try the wet comp test too, blue smoke is usually rings IMO all the times I saw valve seals go it has been white smoke.

the compression scores did not change much for the wet test, about 9psi, and all cylinders were still even, i was able to speek to a mitsu tech for a minute and he stated my compression is good for a 7.8:1 engine and that 164 psi after a rebuild is really damn good that he has never seen one that high before, i took it to my shop and i removed the exhaust manifold (which has a huge crack in the bottom -- common on these i've seen), and low and behold the exhaust port on cylinder #2 is wet, and so are the exhaust valves, hopefully that didn't happen while wet testing ### i did accidentally use a little much oil in a couple cylinders LOL. i'm gonna go and take it out for so many miles and remove the manifold again and see if that cylinder is wet again. i'll update the post afterwards. i really appreciate the info guys, very fast, its nice to have a site like this to refer to, do to the fact i have been working on nothing but american cars at dealerships and mostly just building mustangs which i'm sure y'all hate them hehehe. i plan i doing a big turbo notch back car next year hehe.

np...btw i should have honed my cylinders they still had little gouge lines when I re-installed my pistons LOL

if i were you i would do a leak down test if it fails the leak down test listen for a whistle out of the dipstick tube exhaust intake filter if depending on where you hear the air will tell you whats bad the dipstic tube means rings intae filter means intake valves and exhaust means exhaust valves it also sounds like your turbo is blown if theires an oil film on the intake it could also just be out of time slightly

but you are correct i should do a leak down test, just didn't have time yet, i can only pick at car little by little lately since i have been super busy fixing the "normies" cars. hehehee.

hey 98gst1b, your car looks awesome. i hope i can get mine fixed soon so i can do a evo 16g and a front mount and supporting fuel mods, i will update y'all with the leak down test results tomorrow. thanks again, and good night!
