[RESOLVED] My car is running like it has 272 cams...but the cams are stock

Here is some pics of my timing marks...I put some yellow grease pencil on the marks so you can see them better....I think the intake cam is actually retarded 1 tooth and the exhaust cam is advanced 1 tooth.
I though just because the 2 marks in the center lined up it was ok...I didn't realize there were marks on the outside of the cam gears as well. In the picture you cannot see the outer mark on the Intake gear but its a mirror image of the Exaust side. The outer mark is lower than the inner mark.

Definately off. Since the crank turns clockwise, the intake cam is advanced one tooth and the exhaust cam is retarded one tooth. This adds 30 more crank degrees of overlap!!! Definately cause for lope.

Here's how to replace the timing belt. Reuse everything for now. How old is your timing belt? Just know that you'll have to do this all over again sooner than later if you don't install a new belt.

Ahh i see... I have a reciept for the timing belt job from 2004 from the previous owner. The car has 20,000 miles since then. the water pump and balance shaft belt were replced then too. So I should be able to just change the 2 belts and the tensioner right?

So let me ask. Is there any way for it to have gotten like that from skipping? or was this just improper installation?

I almost want to take it back to the shop that did it and tell them to re-do it the right way...they charged the guy 600 dollars to do the job. I dont see how it could have jumped and gotten like that?

I've had two different shops do the exact same thing with my old n/t. I then decided to do it myself, and it started me on the path of mechanics.

Yeah thats what I think too...you can't ever trust anyone else's work. So Unfortunately the car has been like this since 2004!!!

I May just wait til friday when I get paid and go buy a new mitsu belt with the OEM Balance shaft belt and OEM Tensioner and do it right!

so far EVERYTHING the guy touched on this car is BROKE...I have had to RE-DO everything he messed with :(
So I certainly don't want to put my trust in this belt.

Anyhow thanks again for helpin me figure this out... sorry I didn't listen sooner... I know you guys were sceaming "TIMING IS OFF" and I thought it was okay cause the 2 marks seemed "close enough" But they were NOT Level with the head. So Now I know!

I will fix it this weekend and Report back ASAP...Until then Im stuck driving the gas PIG Jeep around :(

Okay so I Re-did the timing job, using the old belt for now since it only has 20,000 miles and seems in great condition.

I have a few questions about the timing job though.

The tension is set to where I can fit a 3/16" drill bit in between the Auto tensioner and the tensioner bracket , the bit just barely fits...IS THIS ACCEPTABLE?

Also The Tensioner PULLEY where the 2 holes are...the holes are not directly under the center bolt, but MORE to the RIGHT of center...is this OKAY? since I am reusing the T-belt im sure its already stretched a lil.

And My last question is WHERE is this HOLE on the block for the oil pump to put a screwdriver in to check the pumps alighnment? I cannot find it. My Oil pump Lines up with the Timing Marks EVERY 3 crank revolutions. althogh my Book says it should line up on the 6th turn of the crank? But obviously it will line up on the 6th and the 3rd...is this OKAY?

Here are some pics...Does the bottom pic of the cam alighnment look right now?

Its ALL back together! What a difference!!! :) It Idles smooth, I have 19 or 20 inhg of Vacuum and it runs GREAT!!

I can't even begin to explain how happy I am now :) I have been trying to figure this Idle out since I sold my 420a turbo and bought this car last month.

In my first post I questioned wether the timing was off and dismissed it quickly after taking a glance at the Timing marks...

So Learn from my mistake people, Make sure To Check your Timing Marks with a straight edge... they HAVE TO be level with the head.

This is a Common mistake when installing a Timing belt, cause the marks may be lined up when the belt is loose... BUT as you tighten the belt the cams can move. So ALWAYS CHECK and RE-CHECK your marks while you're installing the belts.
