So I have a 1g that was having fuel pressure issues drop the tank and it was rusted. Now just wondering how to clean it since they dont make a replacement tank. One from the dealer is $958 so not going that route. It has a pretty good bit of stuff in it. Im thinking a radiator shop but Does anyone have any suggestions on how to clean this tank? What do you think about having the tank cleaned and coated. The tank has a little surface rust on the inside. NO holes and no rust on outside. The car was sitting for 3+ years when I picked it up from an old man. thanks in advance

Is it rusted inside and out, or just on the outside? Are there holes? If there are holes I would try to find one out of a partout car or a junkyard.

He said in his post.

I would think you could clean it out real well and coat it with something gas wouldn't eat up.

I work at this place called Stiprite and we acid dip parts, so what that does is it will take all the rust off the outside and inside and leave it bare metal. Were located 103 200th ave Union Grove, WI. So idk how far that is away from you?

I had the same problem and here is what I did.

1. Sandblasted the inside of the tank as good I could. Then I left some sand in there and blew in there with a compressor to make the sand swirl around. I did this for like 30 min and used 50 lb of play sand, then blew until I got all the sand out. I have a 185 cfm compressor at work so there was ALOT of air moving around in there.

2. Rinsed it out with water really good and blew it back out with compressor.

3. Put about 16oz of Ospho in the tank and swirled it around until I was sure it coated everything, and drained the excess. Let it cure for 24-48 hours.

4. Rinsed it out with a gallon of Acetone and let it air dry in the sun for a couple hours.

5. Went to NAPA and got POR-15 gas tank sealer and followed the instructions.

Its been repaired for 1 1/2 years. I checked it 6 months ago and it looked perfect.

The product I was talking about is a 3 step product. It cleans the inside of the tank then you apply a prep and then sealer. It leaves a membrane coating on the inside of the tank. I first saw this on powerblocktv trucks.

:DThanks for all of the replies but I just took it to a radiator shop and they blasted it and sealed the tank($150) looks really nice. Just installed it and wa-la my problem is now fixed now its time to start the real upgrades. Once again thanks
