[RESOLVED] Clutch master cylinder BOOT necessary?

Yesterday I was checking for leaks at the master and slave cylinder and I slid the rubber boot off of the master and it wouldnt go back on. Didnt want to take the entire thing out just to put the boot on so I ripped the thing in half and just took it off. So the question is, is the rubber boot necessary to have on?
