I just recently bought a 99 GSX (last week) The car has an AEM EMS Series 1 unit in it. The previous owner did not have the serial connection cable. So I just went and bought one from Radio Shack. I went onto the AEM website and downloaded the up to date software. Hook everything up and it fails to connect to the ECU. I'm at a loss and not sure where to go from here
Since my computer is a different one from the previous owner do I have to reset the EMS or should it just connect.

I have searched and have posted in the AEM forums, but I wanted to post here. All my previous threads have been answered on here.
Thanks guys

Solution
Thanks guys. I got it connected finally. It was the bits per second they were at 9600 and I changed them to 4800 like eclipsegsx said. Everything works out good now.
Are you sure you downloaded the AEMPro software? AEMTuner is for Series II EMS systems.

Plug in your USB cable, turn the ignition on, and open up AEMPro. Go to ECU --> Connection Port. Make sure it's set to Serial (even if you're using a USB adapter) and make sure that you've selected the correct COM port from the drop-down list (pick the one that lists your USB-Serial adapter). Then, go to ECU --> Connect.

If this still doesn't work, with the adapter still plugged in, go to Device Manager (under Control Panel, or shortcut is Windows Key + Pause/Break key). Find the USB adapter in the list under Ports - Com & LPT and double-click on it. Go to the Port Settings tab and change the Bits Per Second value from 9600 to 4800, click OK and close Device Manager. Try the above connection process again.

If you're STILL having issues, then get another USB adapter. Those Radio Shack ones are problematic. Get a good one, made by either IOGEAR or Keyspan (USA-19HS), install their latest drivers for your OS off their website, and you should be good go to.
