yo guys,

So i'm having this problem with my 98 GST and its really starting to pi$$ me off to no end. it just started the other day and gradually got worse. when im driving the car, the motor builds boost and all (i hear the turbo and BOV) but the car just doesnt move, it feels like there is no power to the car at all. i know for a fact that its not the clutch/flywheel ect. im not sure if it could be a clogged cat or what, everything i can think of has been replaced in the past 100 miles (plugs, wires, coil packs, 1g CAS sensor) please give me any/all ideas that you guys have!! thanks a lot
 
My 97 Tsi started doing this intermittently about 2 weeks ago and I still have not found the problem. It drives fine and then sometimes when I accelerate it builds boost but seems like it is dragging an anchor. I dont think it is a fuel problem because my wideband reads constant even when this is happening. It almost feels like timeing is being pulled for some reason. I have the pocket logger software and cable but it will not work with my Palm lifedrive pda :notgood: If I figure something out this weekend I will post the solution to my problem.
 
My 1g done this about a month ago. Turns out mine had jumped time by 3 teeth. Mine was real slow to rev and wouldn't hardly pull out of its tracks, but it still boosted fine.
 
but when it happened it wasnt just like all of a sudden. i drove it to work that morning and it drove fine. when i left work, it gradually got worse as i went home (only 3 miles from work to home) so im not thinking its a timing issue.
 
If the the car is spooling, the car could be pulling timing. It wants to go, but it doesnt move, it seems to get slower. I've had that feeling.

I've had the same symptoms when the base ignition timing was off. I'm assuming you have a 6 bolt swap since you mentioned a 1g CAS, I'm not sure how you ground the ECU on a 98 without DSMlink though.
 
A clogged exhaust or air filter is defiantly a possibly, a unlikely chance though. Do you have a logger? Is this throughout the powerband or just certain places while in boost.

no i dont have a 6 bolt. you can ground base timing by unplugging the injectors on a 7 bolt and then do it that way(works like a charm) i did a 1g CAS rewire to help assist with timing adjustment. (theres ways around everything) i just rechecked base timing and reset it last week 5*BTDC. im going to pull the cat off and see what that does, might be a clogged cat. any other ideas would be greatly appreciated
 
o, and no i dont have a logger. it seems like you're pulling an anchor just as it was mentioned before. turbo spools just fine but it doesnt help because the car isnt going anywhere
 
Same thing happened to me but it was a spun bearing just getting worse and worse.

Hopefully its not the same case for you. I'd probably do a compression test.
 
im not getting any type of noises that a spun bearing would make and i definately dont beat on my car at all either. the car has a new motor in it with about 15,000 miles. keep up with the ides guys, i appreciate all the feedback im getting so far!!!
 
As Spaugh said about his jumping teeth, mine did as well. Jumped like 5 TEETH!!! No idea how, but I'm glad thats all it was. 4 guys and a couple crow-bars and we didn't even have to pull the motor :sneaky: ( we pryed the belt up and spun the cam gears.) worked just fine, no stretching, rips, tears, anything. All good for now!!! :thumb:
 
I had that problem 2 times on my 1G.

the first time was the timming belt. wnet to school and the car was fine. Came back from school the car would just not go, boost was going up to 10lbs and the car wouldnt move.
when i got home the car would not start any more. (reson was bad timing belt, and result was 8 bended valve.)

the second time was because of fuel cut. Too much boost and not enough air to mix with the fuel.

3 things that might be you problem is:
- Timing
- Too much boost
- Bad Turbo (time to get a new one).

Well hopefully when your belt jumped 5 teeth it didn't slip on the crank pulley as well. I guess you would have checked this. As for not fixing it properly, on a collision motor, WOW you have some big kahones. :confused:
 
well if something was messed up with it, i think i'd know about it pretty quickly right?? i mean if you have bent valves, you're going to know it, theres no mistaking it, or am i wrong about that....?
 
Or smoking beast of a car. You got lucky, I'm not as anal as everyone else, LOL, I'd do it too, especially if it was my only car, but seriously, just set aside your Saturday for changing the Timing and Balance shaft belts.

BTW it probably jumped time because the tensioner's are weak.
 
well the timing belt is pretty much brand new, the motor has less than 15,000 miles on it so i think im in the clear there. and believe me, im all about doing things the right way, but its pretty pointless knowing that i could do it the way that i did and get away with it, so i just took my chances. i hate doing things this way, but sometimes things just get done that way.... :sneaky:
