I have a 98 eclipse gst. it has a intake filter, full exhaust with no cat. everything else stock

Here is the problem at about 2,500 rpms to 3,000 rpms my cars boost gauge goes really high past what it normally would go and it builds a lot of boost i think it is building more then stock. When it does this the car has no power and will sometimes give a jerk. It happens in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd can't even get enough power for 4th and 5th. And there is also fuel smell out of the exhaust and a little black smoke.
Does anyone know why i would get a lot of boost and still getting fuel but the car has no power past 2,000 rpms. Anyone with any idea's I'm open......
Thanks

Well, if you've got fuel smell and black smoke, you are obviously running too rich. Is the fuel system stock (injectors, pump, fuel pressure regulator, etc)? It could be a number of things. Vacuum leak causing wrong boost pressure to be read, bad O2 sensor causing wrong mixture of air/fuel, bad fuel pressure regulator or solenoid, etc. If its all stock, grab the shop manual and start testing things one by one.

are you using the stock boost gauge?? cause those arent too reliable try an aftermarket and see if your actually getting the boost you think your getting...

Yeah everything else is stock.
I will Start testing everything one by one then.
And hook up a boost gauge and see what I get.
Any one else with any idea's let me know and thanks alot for the ones so far.

You first need to do a boost leak check

If you have a bunch of leaks, this could be why you're running rich(You're loosing metered air but the ecu is still dumping the fuel for it).

Right where you're car is falling on it's face is where the ECU starts looking for knock.
Read through this thread and see if it sounds familiar.

(quote by me in ^^ thread)
Does it usually do it when the RPM's are fairly low?
When you let off and get right back on it, does it usually drive fine? Usually better if you do it (let off and get back on it) while the RPM's are above 3000 or more?
If so I would bet 10 to 1 you're having phantom knock problems and the timing is being pulled. Hear any lifter tick?

I hope this helps

BEST GUESS:you have a boost leak...

symptoms...

the stock MAS vs RPM reading boost guessing gauge is climbing much higher/faster than before

ecu is compensating for what SURELY must be massive airflow into the motor (it's coming thru the MAS after all... right?) by adding a bunch of fuel.

but the air is not getting into the motor b/c you have a leak... so you are running super rich., with retarded timing, for the actual amount of air that does make it in.
