i just bought this 91 talon tsi awd yesterday and i pulled the cylinder head off. i thought that it had jumped timing since i could move the motor by hand and it would stop when i got to a certain point each way.

well i got done pulling the head about 15 minutes ago to find that cylinder #1's piston dosnt move at all when you crank it by hand the other 3 cylinders move fine up and down. so im guessing it broke the piston rod. now i have to tear off the oil pan to check for sure.

there are no visible cracks in the block and the cylinder walls all look fine so im kinda stumped as far as if i can just put my extra set of rods and pistons in there. i want to go cheap so i can get it running and then find out any other problems befor i put my built motor in it. (i have a motor with forged weiscos, stainless valves arp everything, ect)

ill post up pics as soon as i get my camera back from my mom.
 
yeah i would say broking the piston rod but most times it cracks the block too......and the rod cap may have just came off...and can you move the piston up and down by hand
 
yeah i still havnt pulled the pan but i hope the motor isnt toast. its the right bore size i need for my forged pistons and i have new rods, crank, bearings, and arp hardware. heres a pic from above the motor.

Cylinder number 1 seems like the piston is rotated. Maybe just the reflection but the valve reliefs don't look like they're in the right spot. Tear down the block and get some pics.
 
yeah thats the first thing i noticed when i pulled the head off. it was rotated and all the way down at the bottom of the cylinder. i thought that the rod cap just came off till i found the hole in the side of the block. it was hidden behind the a/c compressor bracket. so this motor is toast and thank god i have my new motor at my house.

the guy i got the car from said it died at idle and thought it jumped timing. but he was completely bull sh*ting me. he would have known that it was more than that. im still happy i bought it cause the body is in great shape and has documents of a recent tranny rebuild. if it was just timing i would have had it running already.

yeah i bought this 91 talon tsi awd and he told me the car broke at idle and it sounded like it jumped timing well this is what i saw when i tore it apart. im still happy with the buy cause for $500 the car is in dam good shape and has a recent tranny for it with alot of documents.

i know the guy bull sh*ted me but it is whatever.

Still isn't a bad buy even if the block is trashed. Pull that thing out, check the crank and all other parts, and hopefully all you will need is a block.

yeah the block is toast along with the crank. i got a whole new motor for it so its all good. i have .040 over weiscos forged pistons and arp everything for bolts. but it looks as if the rod bolts broke first and then threw everything around. the motor was a rebuilt block that was in the car. it was already honed .040 over.
