Hi all,

I have searched and found minimal information on one of the topics that really interests me. What is the top speed of a '97 GSX?

What I saw on the previous questions like this are "its illegal/stupid/etc". Now to get this out of the way, I am searching for a car that can go fast LEGALLY so please don't respond that going fast is illegal. The car will be driven fast only in Germany. So, does anyone know the top speed of a stock '97 GSX?

I am buying the car to send to Europe as a "beater" that will likely not come back and is somewhat unusual (no turbos were sold in the country I will be living). The GSX is a cheaper alternative to a Audi Quattro or BMW xi.

Now, the car will have one year without having to meet the Euro regs. After that, it has to meet them. Are there any "stealth" mods that can be done to increase the power to the 250-265hp level to be about even with the Euro STi? The limits on this is that the cat must stay, noise can't increase, and the airbox must stay. So, for an inspection (which are very thourough) it has to appear stock. The boost restrictor can be removed, etc. I want a little more power, not 500hp.

Also, with the interesting way that the ICs are mounted, is there any issues with prolonged high speed runs? For example the other night I ran from Basel Switzerland (on the German border) to Stuttgart. It was night so I had to drive slow and the car was an Alfa Romeo 147 which wasn't that fast. Speeds were generally around 90-100mph at night. Car didnt' feel inspirining past that. What kind of speed can the GSX be driven at for a prolonged period without cooling problems?

This is a biased forum, but will a nice, stock GSX be a nice little car to have there? I must decide by Friday if I buy the car (I return to CH on Sunday).

TIA

Boost controller, you can put a cone filter in the stock airbox for decent upgrade in power, there are tons of upgrades. Check out the vFAQ and click on the upgrade paths for more ideas.

I've had my old 95 Talon TSi AWD, which is mechanically identical to the gsx...

I've had it about 140 mph on a t28 (upgraded from the t25) and about 16 lbs of boost...
There is no so called top speed limiter (unlike gs-t's)so it'll go as fast as the gears can take you...

By stealth mods, there are quite a few things that can be done to make the car upgraded while looking stock....

The turbo for instance take the t25 out and put in a t28 variant...Depending how strict and how well they know their cars over there which you said they didn't really make turbo models in that contry you can get away with a mitsubishi based turbo that still looks totally stock...

Just off the top of my head the biggest turbo I can think of in stock looking form would be the slowboyracings bastard 20g....20g inside a 16g housing.... but I'me sure a t28 or a 16g can reach your goals...

You'll have to upgrade the injectors and have something to tune with like DSMLink, or the new ECMLink which is the newer upgraded form of DSMLink.....Also a wideband 02 is a must....

You never said anything about the intake pipe....but you said the box must stay....the only thing I can think is maybe a injen intake pipe/ knock off found on ebay...it's based for a stock setup I guess......Maybe somebody can add whether or not other aftermarket intake pipes will fit the stock box....

Intercooler...youll want something stock looking but upgraded, so I guess a FMIC is out of the question...I've heard hahnracecraft made a very nice Side Mount Intercooler for 2'gs which will defenitaly help combat heatsoak....You never said any regulations on piping for the intercooler....so idk whether their out of the question...

You'll definetly want a clutch upgrade as well....ACT, Clutch masters, Exedy, It's up to you....

Well thats all I can think of off the top of my head....More information is needed for the best possible answers...Jim

What is the top speed of my car?
Top speeds will obviously vary with the modifications to the vehicle. However, the top speeds for stock vehicles are in the following neighborhood:
- 1G AWD: around 140 MPH / 225 km/h
- 1G FWD: 140 MPH / 225 km/h
- 2G AWD: somewhere around 130-140 MPH.
- 2G FWD: some cars are speed limited to 130 MPH - see below for details

Is there a rev limiter on my car?
As far as is known, the ECU will stop fuel delivery on all the DSM cars at 7500 RPM.
Some 2G FWD cars have a speed limiter which cuts off fuel at 130 MPH. This is because the stock H-rated tires are only rated up to 130 MPH. Replacing the tires and performing this procedure will eliminate it. Warning: you do this procedure at your own risk. There is some information that this fix only works for 1995-1998 cars.
