I have a 95 gst and it grinds while starting up. i have been through 4 starters since i had the car up and running. i also kept having the starter solenoid pop off with all of them. i just put my engine back in and running. i replaced the timing belt balance shaft belt and i also put in a brand new fidanza flywheel and an exedy oem clutch an put another new starter on and it still grinds on the flywheel before it starts.

what can be causing it to still grind??????

I would check the writing through the ignition to the starter. The gear in the starter could be coming out too early or the teeth not lining up.

I think he meant "wiring".

Sounds like something is out of alignment or bolted on out of whack. Is your parts store (repeatedly) giving you the wrong starter?. Rock Auto specifies "Manual" or Auto" and "Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction?" Don't know wtf that means, but some specify it and some don't. Maybe try a new parts store.

That's what I figured but the all the wiring is good. an as far as a wrong starter I guess it could be a possibility so ill try a different store

Definitely make sure it's the right starter. Manual and auto are different, but I can't tell you if it's possible to bold them onto the wrong car.

hopefully that's all it is. I never knew there was a difference in the starters for auto an manual and I wasn't asked to specify in the parts store. is one of them bigger than the other?

Yeah they are different lengths in how they engage from what I recall. I didn't pull out calipers and measure but the visible difference was significant.

okay thank you i didnt know if there would be a visual difference to go by to see if i hav the right one or not.

and yes i do have the right flywheel. before i bought it i did my research on the flywheels and as to the spacer i do have it on but it was bent on the guide pin on the opposite side of the starter and it did sit in flush once i was able to get it to stay.

sorry it took so long to write back but im still having the grinding problem. i checked 3 different parts stores and they all verified i had the proper starter. and i double checked my flywheel and they are the proper ones 110 teeth. is there anything else that i am over looking??

i dont know if this helps or not but i do have a 97 4g63t engine that came out of an automatic in my 95 with a manual tranny

please help i have no idea what the problem is and i want to get my eclipse back on the road again asap

i believe so. the link said that all 2g turbo 2WD A/T, 4WD A/T, and 2WD M/T use the same starter plate...the engine came out of my 97 a/t and is bolted to 95 m/t and both were off of a fwd

however my starter plate was bent around the guide opposite to the starter so would that cause it or be a probable cause of it?
