1. The power steering rack gears will have a LOT more stress on them, since they will be getting no assistance from the power steering fluid. Stress they are not designed for, so they will eventually break.

That's a nice thought, in theory, but too many people have run without power steering for a long time to prove this argument wrong. If the system works for six or eight years without the PS pump before failing, then who's to say the failure wasn't just from normal wear and tear?

2. It will be a major pain in the ass to steer at low speeds. The steering ratio on the power steering rack is just too small to give you enough leverage.

Maybe, but again, a lot of people do it.

Oh, and if you are going to test this, actually loop the power steering lines, so they don't run through the pump. If you leave them hooked up to the pump, it's like steering in concrete. Not fun, and not good for your steering rack.

That's true.

okay, i've been driving my car for six months without power steering because it kept popping the belt off so i just took it off and kept it off. sorry i'm not trying to steal this thread or whatever but from what i'm reading i'd just be better off just taking the whole set up off and looping the hoses? after i got used to no power steering i think i like it alot better because i think it gives you a more "true" feel of the car while your driving

it seems that everyone has mixed opinions i guess im just gunna take it all out quick question do you have to take out the little pully in the back as well or can that just stay un harmed

when people say loop the lines what exactly does that mean?

i believe by looping the lines it means to take the hydraulic lines going in on both sides of the steering rack that connect to the power steering pump, and cut the lines and connect them together so the fluid just goes from one side of the rack to the other while you are turning instead of trying to force the fluid through the pump

Make one line feed into the other, creating a loop in the line from the rack to the rack. If you just hack the line and cap it the pressure still is applied to the end of the lines while turning the wheel. The wheel turning is assisted by the pump, so the lines are pressurized to the pump. If you remove the pump, the line still applies the pressure the same. So if you loop the two together they will not have resistance at the end of the line, which makes it a little easier to turn the wheel. If you dont loop them the steering assistance is counteracted, because the fluid cannot move at all, so you kinda fight yourself while steering.

And I have worn out a steering rack with power steering, so I wouldnt worry about that. Most important part is keeping dirt/crap out of the lines so your rack doesnt get nasty. Also make sure that the boots on your CV shafts are on there. If you ever take them off for tie rod issues or whatever, make sure you seal that back up too! Best two ways to preserve your rack.

Thats what eventually breaks the rack, the dirt and shit that gets in there.

And it is a pain in the A@@ to change your rack. Trust!

im removing my powersteering also and will like to know were the lines are that i need to remove

They are located on the drivers side of the car under the intake manifold. If I remember right on a 2g one hose goes straight up and over the motor mount bracket to the PS pump, and the other goes from the bottom of the PS pump back to under the IM manifold. Not sure if you can do this on a 2g without taking the IM manifold off, I know I couldn't on my car but that's cause the AC was still in there too, now that it's out I could probably do it again with the IM on the car.

thanks bro i have a 99 420a will the lines still be in the same order as you told me or its a lil diffrent cause under my hood the lines are on the left on the passengerside i just want to take them off the rack that way i can loop the lines do i just follow the lines and thay will lead to the rack ....

Sorry I missed that, but you seem like you have a pretty good idea of what to do - just follow the two black lines from the PS pump. A good pair of snips (or in my case I used some small bolt cutters) will definitely be your friend, as there's hard lines under parts of the rubber hose, and the rubber hose is very very tough stuff as is.

ok so once i follow the lines from the powersteering pump down to the rack it will lead me to the two lines i need to loop afther i dissconncet the ps lines...

i have one more question when i remove the powersterering pump do i remove the tensioner idler pulley to?

i have one more question when i remove the powersterering pump do i remove the tensioner idler pulley to?

I just left mine on the car, might pull it off next time I do the timing belt (couple years hopefully) Will it help with power? Yes. Will it be enough to notice? Probably not. Same with removing the PS in the first place.

so when i put the shorter belt on do i put it around the pulley to if i leave it on there///// or just put the belt around the crankshaft pulley and ac....

funny i took mine out the other day you put it around the crankshaft pulley also you have to loosen the power steering bracket the put the belt on and pry a prier bar in between the pump and bracket tighten it up and your done

I'm guessing the 2g has something else on it also? A 1g car just has the PS belt on it's own pulley, sorry man I can't help you out on that one.

looping the lines together, so the just bypass the pump i assume

Yep that's it. Makes the engine bay look ALOT cleaner though. Also makes it easier to remove your exhaust and intake manifolds, and it makes changing the knock sensor a PIECE OF CAKE!
