so i want to delete my p/s and a/c i know its pretty straight forward but are there any tricks to it that make it easier and my other question is does anyone know the belt size i will need after

Since the AC and Powersteering share the same belt, you just gotta yank the pump/compressor and your all set. you can go even further and pull all the lines out too if you like, but its a pain in the ass without power steering. pull your belt off and drive around for a while so you can feel what its like. then if you can live with it, pull it.

wait so the ac and ps share the same belt with nothing else just them two? and the idea you gave me was great so i dont regret doing it thanks :thumb:

I currently wiegh 140lbs, and this is the most i've ever weighed in my life. The point is i was driving my car without PS when i weighed only 120 (i know i am very scrawny) and the only trouble i have without PS is parallell parking, and extreme manuvering in parking lots. There really isnt much of a diff with and without PS while moving, its just the parking scenario's wich you can get relativly use to.

can anyone draw me up a little diagram on what the belt looks like connected to the pulleys thanks

The other thing you would need to do is loop the lines at the steering rack so that you keep the lubrication fluid in and dirt out. Last time I did that to a car I just cut the soft part of lines and clamped them to a barbed hose fitting.

so just removing the belts dosent do any harm to the car cause i thought that belt also powered other stuff:confused:

Definitely just remove the belt first to see if you can live with it. I tried that and it was a major pain and I didnt like it so I just put the belt back on.

I've read that it is easier with everything disconnected and the lines looped than with just taking the belt off, but I don't understand that :hmm:

When you have the lines looped you're not trying to push fluid THROUGH the pump that isn't being driven by the engine. It's a slight difference but it's noticable

Honestly if you've ever driven a bare bones car that had a manual rack and another car that just had a missing belt, the manual rack car IS easier to drive.

You should NOT remove the power steering on a 2G DSM, for a couple of reasons:

1. The power steering rack gears will have a LOT more stress on them, since they will be getting no assistance from the power steering fluid. Stress they are not designed for, so they will eventually break.

2. It will be a major pain in the ass to steer at low speeds. The steering ratio on the power steering rack is just too small to give you enough leverage.

All of these reasons would be null and void if there was a manual steering rack available to swap into a 2G DSM. But there isn't. Oh, and if you are going to test this, actually loop the power steering lines, so they don't run through the pump. If you leave them hooked up to the pump, it's like steering in concrete. Not fun, and not good for your steering rack.

so is it bad for the motor or anything if you just take everything out ?

Should leave the a/c. It only takes power to turn if it's acually turning. (a/c off=no power loss from a/c)

i know im not amazing at drawing but my question is i was looking at the system and it looks like four pullyes 1 power steering 2 a/c and one other what does that do any ideas thanks

The unlabeled pulley on the left is the crankshaft pulley/"harmonic dampener." This pulley is what rotates the belt and supplies power to all of the accessories. The other unlabeled pulley is just a tensioner idler pulley. Its purpose is to route the belt along a certain path while keeping tension on it.

Unless you include the fact that the a/c and all the lines weigh close to 20-30lbs. Weight reduction = power :p. Us 420a guys need every hp we can get.

I'd tend to agree with rstchris... A/C is purely a personal preference to remove (as is P/S, really). The weight savings isn't really significant enough to matter unless you are driving a track car. I don't remove it for weight purpose... I remove it because I don't like added crap/complexity in my car. When the clutch is disengaged the parasitic loss from the pulley is inconsequential.

and again in English LOL

Removing power steering is stupid on a 2G DSM. Unless you are going to use it as a rail car. Did nobody read my post?

I've known plenty of people that have hacked up their P/S on 2G's, including one person that hasn't had P/S for at least 6 years... his is still kicking. Some people are minimalist... that doesn't make them stupid.
