Is it necessary to remove the oil pan in order to replace the front case/balance shaft elimination? I am going to be doing my timing belt and cams along with a new oil pump/front case. Can I leave the oil pan on or does it have to come out?

I guess you could get it on with the oil pan on. But, you would run the risk of the oil pan leaking. Better to take 5 minutes to remove the oil pan and run fresh rtv all the way around. Use the right stuff, it never leaks.

Does the downpipe need to come off to get the oil pan off? I was trying to avoid taking the DP off AGAIN since I just replaced the gasket for the O2 to downpipe. But if it has to come off then so be it.

Buy a tube of the Copper RTV Gasket Maker. It works great for that gasket, and any other mating surfaces after it such as the dowpipe to cat, or cat to cat-back. I also use it between the turbo and the o2 housing, and it has worked well every time. You want to get real gaskets in between the head to turbo manifold, and the turbo manifold to turbo. Those 2 areas are too hot and under too much pressure to use gasket maker.

Downpipe needs to come off. If you have AWD, the xfer case needs to come off. Also the driver's side axle needs to come out. I mean you could get around it, but it's a pain in the ass to get to the bolts above the axle on the oil pan.

YES, remove the oil pan and user the "Right Stuff" to make a new gasket when putting it back on. It's awesome.

he has AWD, so drop the downpipe, and the transfer case, and the oil pan, then remove the cover, tap those bearings out pop the new ones in and make sure you're blocking off the oil ports. Then put the cover and pan back on, leave the downpipe and transfer case off, start her up and make sure everything's ok first, and THEN finish putting everything back together so you dont have to pull it all apart again.

Well I have a new front case, new gears, balance shaft elim. kit, etc etc. My oil pump is starting to whine pretty bad now and I have no idea if it was EVER replaced. So I am just going to change it all. Already have all the parts for it. Guess I will just mess with the downpipe later on...I have to change the O2 and manifold studs out anyways.
