My boyfriend and his friends just did an awesome job and rebuilt my engine. It took two weeks. The only question of concern is that now the car feels like wants to die sometimes(mainly after i stall) The RPM's also drop pretty quickly. I was just wondering if anyone knew what this could be because it seems very strange to me. Thanks for the help

Sounds to me like a vacuum leak, check all air hoses including intercooler & hoses comming off of the intake manifold.

"feels like wants to die sometimes(mainly after i stall)"

I don't get it. It dies and then dies again?

How high is the idle? Did they time the engine? Did they adjust the BISS? Did they rebuild the ENTIRE engine? The timing belt only? Top end? Bottom end?

I personally set the idle to about 1000rpm, cause sometimes it dips and freaks me out, and, it even dies if the fan comes on the same time I take my foot off the gas and push the clutch in for a stop sign (or whatever).

The idle is around 700ish, they had a friend help them retime the engine, they didnt touch the BISS screw. they changed the pistons and rings on it. put another head on it. and put a new timing belt on it and a new tensioner and all new gaskets. resently it started making this noise, in this video u cant see anything but you can hear pretty well, any clues on what it can be?

Wow that sounds pretty bad!! :notgood: If you could get video so we could see what is going on that would help a lot more!!!
Valve train?? It’s a shot in the dark! ROFL or could be something rattling on the motor!! Have you tried to pin point what part of the motor is making this noise? Example (valve cover noise, the back side of the block, coming from the belt area..)

Sounds like valve train, but I cannot see the engine.

I wonder if the camshaft bolt caps have come loose? Check the top Timing belt cover, sometimes my timing belt runs into the camshafts (and its plastic so you can just push it out of the way), maybe yours is, but I don't think so, that sounds like valves.

"another head" Used? New? off of what?

The timing is off.

this is the guy that rebuilt the engine, i posted this video or sound if u will, on another board, and almost every1 has said it was a spun bearing. there are a couple wierd things about it tho, when you first start the car it doesnt do it until it is at operating temp. so far i checked if the cams are aligned, and they where, cuz hte motor ran fine for about 30miles then she stalled the car, and it started doing this wierd shit, first it started out very fantly and got louder. also, when the motor had about 5miles on it, i compression tested it and they where all around 150ish. i comp tested it the other day and they all have dropped to 120 OMG. if the timing is off this would make sense, cuz its not allowing the motor to get enough compression on the compression stroke cuz the valves are opening too soon. or the rings could have somehow gotten destroyed (brand new rings btw) the idea that the timing is off makes sense, but the one factor that doesnt is the fact that it starts when the motor is warm. as of yet the car has not overheated or anything. and the head has about 90K on it, bought from another DSM owner, all the valves looked good to eye anyways. the car is currently parked, because i wanna find out whats wrong wiht it before it does too much damage. but if its a bearing it already has done enuff damage :( anyways if anybody has any idea what else it could be. speak up!

thank you very much for the help
alex

P.S. the video was just me standing over the engine, there was nothing much to see, BTW the car was open exhaust, just o2 housing. but that is not the sound of any exhaust.

... I would assume you would see this/already check this...

But if the car has been running on just the o2 housing. It seems to me its very likely you melted the shit out of the timing belt cover, possibly onto, or in the way of the timing belt.

other than that, i'm not really sure. Doesn't sound like a spun bearing to me at all, but my experience is somewhat limited.

The first thing I thought when i heard it was valves hitting pistons. But from the video its a total shot in the dark.

its to fast to be a spun rod bearing.

dude thats exactly what my friend told me, who spun many bearings on his 3s. if it melted the shit outa the timing cover. it wouldnt explain y when the car is cold it doesnt make the noise, but thats a good theory too.

Its definitely in the head. You may have to pull it. Sounds like valve train problems for sure. Almost like bad lifters... on crack!

could that cause such low compression? should i replace the lifters with the lifters form the old head? cuz the old motor used to make this kinda noise too, but not nearly as bad, on the old motor it was the other way it would make noise while it was cold, and then the noise would go away when it warmed up.

Just got the sound to work, sounds like a loose lifter hitting off the rod and spring or something, mark the timing and take off the valve cover and cams.

If the timing was off, do you think she bent some valves and now that the valves are bent they are hitting something?
If I owed the car I would take the head off and bring to a machine shop and have it checked out.. That my .02

replaced with the lifters from the old head. found one callapsed lifter, the noise got quiter but is still there. :(
